Education & The Significance of Life is a great book.

I've read that he was an alcoholic and had relatively strict Christian parents, which probably contributed to his alcoholism + obsession with Buddhism, but he's still a very cool guy.
like most american gurus

Excellent entry point to eastern thought and an entertaining character. He had some important things to say about the practices and prominent characters of early Chàn. He unfortunately gave a rather one-sided view of Zen Buddhism, which started the western "beat Zen" bullshit. He over-emphasized the "wise fool" stereotype and went to great lengths trying to explain some of the deeper aspects of Zen, essentially in the wrong ways, which is why it's often misunderstood today. I don't care in the least about his alleged alcohol problems.
