Herman Potočnik (nicknamed Noordung - it's said to be a play on the German word Ordnung, which is in an archaic Slovene word known as ordung/a - his nickname bascially means "no order") was a Slovene man born in 1892 who served as a military engineer during the First World War. After the war, he studied engineering in Vienna and was the pioneer of rocket science and space technology. His 1928 work The Problem of Space Travel was the first book to deal with the concept of a space station (his was the first plan for the first man-made object in space), he wrote about the importance of the geostationary orbit. He was the first to wrote of man-made objects (satellites) that would orbit the Earth for science reasons, to photograph the surface, as well as for communication. His work was an influence on the German circle (von Braun & co) and possibly on the Russians, too. Unfortunately, this great visionary died only a year after writing his book - 28 years before the first satellite was launched to space and 40 years before the first man walked on the surface of the Moon.
