>"There exists another history, more absurd [ridicule] than the history of Rome since the time of Tacitus: it is the history of Byzantium. This worthless collection contains nothing but declamations and miracles. It is a disgrace to the human mind."
He can't keep getting away with this

Fourth Crusade did nothing wrong

He's right though, the Byzantines are the biggest joke of an "empire" ever.
>>
>>927734
I'm pretty sure China is a bigger joke than Byzantium.

Aren't you forgetting someone?

The more I find out about Voltaire, the more I begin to dislike him.

He strikes me as someone more preoccupied with satirizing everything instead of developing actual positive ideas for how the world should function. Basically just a smug hedonist who only managed to talk shit for so long because it kept being politically viable for different states to take him in when the one he was staying in inevitably got fed up on his shit.

Is Voltaire proto-/pol?
>>
>>927701

Rome over istanbul just for the great writers that lived and wrote there
>>
Would Voltaire be able to get a degree today if he wrote like that?

>>928205
He's literally Marx minus Judaism

So... /pol/?

Given he spent his life vilifying the West and praising Orientals I'm sure he would have been given a warm welcome.
>>
>>927699
What the fuck even is his problem?
>>

The more I read about Voltaire, the more I begin to like him. I'm yet to find a more quotable person.

Candide is one of the funniest books I've ever read. His ability to express his religious and political arguments in such a witty way is worthy of respect.

Voltaire may have been funny but he was the embodiment of everything wrong with the Enlightenment.
>>
>>928491
Actually, I'd argue that the Enlightenment was everything wrong about Voltaire. Take his message and replace the wit and rationality with radicalism and morbidity.

Byzantium was an Empire that spanned 3 continents and 1000 years. It held some of the greatest minds, inventions, and cities in all of European history.

Voltaire is an overrated frog popularized by occasionally making some jokes

You mean the Holy Roman Empire did.

Hapsburg empire is not the same thing as the Holy Roman Empire.

I wasn't referring to the Habsburg. The HRE fits the criteria that he listed better than the Byzantines.
