University of Lisbon, doing a course that enables me to take classes in several schools within the uni (I know it's common in the States but it's a one of its kind thing here). It's centred in the Humanities school (Faculdade de Letras) and I plan on taking there about two thirds of my classes, the rest being in the Law school (FDUL), the Economics school (ISEG) and the political science school (ISCSP), by order of relevance.

Question from an oldfag-- I went to Williams, although I had scholarship offers to NYU (the NYU one would have included med school acceptance and tuition), U of chicago, a bunch of others. I didn't crack "Harvard/Princeton/Stanford," waitlisted by all 3. Got into Yale bc I was a legacy.
Anyway, looking at the admissions stats, is it all but impossible for a White Male to get into a good uni these days? I look at my Alama Mater (williams) admissions numbers and the %, and at the percentage of places like Yale... Is it possible for regular White, non-Jews who aren't coming out out of Deerfield/Exeter to even have a chance, unless you are really good at a sport?

But then we do live in a world where all of that is quickly becoming irrelevant. Undergrad is meaningless everywhere and may as well be done online, graduate studies are also more often done online by people furthering their existing career in the field. Getting into grad school is more dependent on test scores and cirriculum vitae than spooky handshakes and schools in new england.
The only time any of that bullshit might matter at all is getting into some sort of graduate assistant position somewhere relevant to your PhD.

you do hardly any actual history until 3rd year, something like less than half your credits in 1st and 2nd (people have complained about how many dogshit subjects you need to take in 1st and 2nd year but it hasn't made much difference)
professors that have stuck out in my mind are stefan brink, andrew mackillop and robert frost; brink does all the vikings and scandinavian history stuff which we are very good for as a university apparently, and he's like a world class expert in that thing, Mackillop does British India stuff and he's generally a good guy but sets the most work of any professor I've had. Frost does military history and early modern stuff, pretty good as well.
anthony heywood will talk about the russian railways a lot and some people swear by him but he's not for me

Though Oxford's offers are usually AAA, very few successful applicants end up with AAA. A*AA-A*A*A* is the norm.

Firstly, this is not true. Many people get AAA, but don't be misled into thinking that the majority of intelligent people end up with such results. Secondly, though many universities say they will accept AAA and give AAA offers, they actually will accept much lower than that; this is standard practice. Don't think because lots of universities say they only accept AAA that they in fact only accept AAA. Oxbridge and a few others only do this.

You got the equivalent of 4 or you actually did UK A-Levels outside the UK? If the former, little can prepare you for the intensity of A-Levels. ehh, not as interesting as it may seem. Most of the people in my class are pretty unversed in any school of thought and thus don't have much to converse about. It's a good business program, don't get me wrong, but they're passionate about numbers and models to squeeze more profits rather than the ideas behind them.
I'm doing a double major though, so my history courses satisfies that urge for conversation about culture, economic theory, and government. Plus I'm pretty good at it (51/50 for my Modern Russian History midterm)

Just to play devil's advocate here I would recommend our local uni. There has been tons of research done that shows that attending a highly ranked school is less beneficial than being highly ranked at your school. This allows you to get more out of your education by being a teacher favorite rather than just blending in to the crowd.

Of course I am not in your head and if you aren't going to be able to do what your passionate about than it might not be worth it but I hope this helps you make an informed decision. Also, I know for some majors this is less true than others. I think for STEM it tends to be more true but for one of my potential majors (econ) it is less than accurate from what I have read.

At that point a lot of it comes down to what you think of the city and stuff if it really is so nail-bitingly close. It sounds like you don't really like the culture (my mom is from Alabama and she went to UA Tuscaloosa and is still trying to convince me to go there but I can't stand the South) but does that outweigh the difficulty and shock of moving to a whole different country? Also, what majors are you looking at (mostly out of curiosity but that can be a big factor)?

If that's the case I would say KCL is probably your best choice. Also just from a couple posts back and forth I can tell you would rather got to KCL than stay in Alabama, which means that if you don't you might regret it later in your life. If you are really this set on it, it would be illogical to not do it because -- at least for myself -- you will blame any future unhappiness on this one decision.

Some students have been jailed for six months for lying on job application forms, it emerged, but the offence carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in the most serious cases.
The disclosure came as figures showed a sharp rise in employment-related fraud, with prosecutions soaring by almost 60 per cent in just 12 months.
According to CIFAS, the UK fraud prevention service, 324 people were prosecuted in 2013 for all forms of fraudulent applications, including submitting false paperwork and withholding information. This compared with just 205 a year earlier.

He's just guessing that the lower ranked have it easier -- that they are so low because they equip their students with invaluable life skills. In reality, they're both equally shit but students at better universities know that if they don't lie on their SSS their uni ranking will go down and their degree will have less value at the end of it. It's simply that people at top 10 are smarter about things.

I always found those forms annoying. I just simply filled in a 3/5 for every tutor and lecturer. At least now I don't have to worry too much and just get this degree over with. It's still kinda a surprise to hear that the rankings are just cancer
Michigan State History Major. The history department here is pretty cool and since I got most of my generic requirements done at Lansing Community College I have a lot of classes in stuff I'm actually interested in. Plus the department is very generous about its scholarships.
