Are rights just made-up privileges pulled out of thin air, or are they just part of the whole "social contract" idea?
>>
The concept of a "privilege" is of completely artificial origin; the idea that one person or group of people can deny an individual the ability to perform a certain action or access to certain goods/services is a byproduct of a constructed societal bias and has no natural bearing.
>>
Individual rights are the inverse of duties on persons to not fuck with your person or property prior to society. They are prerequisites for any type of society.

Civil rights like due process or the right to vote are semi-contractually provided by a government because do not do so leads to abuses by government.

Modern positive rights like the right to education or healthcare is pure postmodern memery that is made out of thin air and derives not in the least from natural necessity as the more traditional rights do.

The most common contemporary conception of rights, that is human rights, are completely made up.

They came out of certain strands of christianity and they're based on patently absurd ideas such as egalitarianism and individualism.

Rights are a delusion we tell each other that we have to make the world a semi-decent place. Unfortunately for us, as we've seen from history and precedence, these rights mean nothing when you've got someone kicking down your door and forcing you to do whatever they please.

Every "right" you're granted right now is only because your state allows you to have them. They are not intrinsic to you, i.e you weren't born with them. If you lived outside of a state (say refugee) you have no rights, no state is willing to grant you these rights.

It doesn't have to be a state either. It can be tribe, community, polis, whatever you and those around you agree upon.

Your two options are the same.

But yeah, rights are just ideals a society holds. If America collapsed and its culture eradicated then the new society might say there is no such thing as a "right to bear arms" or rights to privacy. I'd like to see fucking women hold their reproductive rights in a apocalyptic wasteland.

There is no value in rights.
