If Hong Xiaquan had established the Heavenly Kingdom and overthrown Buddhism and Confucianism in China, would China be an overall better place of living over history?

If not, what are your speculations?

Christianity is a destabilizing peasant religion with slave morality. It would be disastrous for China because it would eventually collapse just like it has in Europe, leaving a cultural desert ripe for the picking. China can actually recover from the Cultural Revolution, and continue to reestablishing Confucian thought, because Chinese spiritual practices are not tied to the government and are also truely pluralistic and organic. They don't need priests and religious bodies to organize their spiritual traditions for them, and so those traditions don't just disappear when the institutions decay.

Hello Chang hows Canada?

We would have had the Warlord Era hit half a decade earlier than it did. A good portion of the Taiping Rebellion were just dissatisfied with the Qing instead of actually believing in the Heavenly Kingdom.

Even if Hong and company overthrew the Qing, there is no way they would be able to last very long, let alone eliminate Confucianism and Buddhism, win over the elites and makes allies anywhere.

Confucianism was hardwired into the culture, and even the Taiping took a lot of cues from it in a variety of ways, like super strict hierarchy and Hong's biblical commentaries. It'd be hard to rip out, and the non-Taiping elites(a very powerful majority) certainly weren't on board with it.

Honestly it's hard to say what would take place. When the Taiping were ascendant from the fall of Nanjing until the failed Tianjin campaign(so 1853-1856), Hong himself was mostly preoccupied with theological nonsense, and so were the other kings(especially the Eastern King or whichever one was channeling the voice of god) and the court as well. After 1856 things started getting really fucky in Taiping lands, both socially and administratively. They were only really served well by Shi Dakai and some new blood later on.

So on the question of whether or not China would be better off under the Taiping, I'd say no. They wouldn't last long and would usher in another civil war and likely leave the country even weaker than it was under the late Qing.

People tend to forget that most of Hong's rebels were in it to fuck up the Qing. Lord knows what would happen had he succeeded and told these special interest groups "you christian now."

Seeing that some of the non-Christian Taiping Soldiers were the best in China at the time. Liu Yongfu's Black Flags even went on to fight in Vietnam and Taiwan following the fall of the Taipings

The funny thing is Hong had a shot at the title if it wasnt for the westernized Qing armies. The Banner Armies of the Qing aint what they used to be in the 1700's.

Hong and the gang DID tell all the rebels that they were Christian, albeit a very very sinocized version of it. Whether or not they bought in was another question of course.

They Qing forces may have driven them into the arms of the Taiping, but the Taiping didn't even declare them to be the enemy until early 1851 - many years after the movement started.

As to Hong taking the Imperial title, it was more Taiping incompetence that stopped them. They were from the south and had no experience with northern terrain(flat) and climate(cold). They weren't prepared for the winter.

The westernized forces were a bit minor IMO, it was really the regional gentry-elites that mobilized their own personal armies that really tipped the balance.

What the hell are you talking about? Taoism and Confucianism have worked hand in hand for the entire history of China.

"Slave morality" is a very specific Nietzchean term. It is a reference to the fact that Judaism, the basis of Christianity, was formed in the context of an enslaved people, and imprinted their hatred of the masters, strength, and dominance, into the religion. It does not imply that one is necessarily weak, but that one MORALIZES weakness. It's one of the reasons Europeans conquered the world in the name of Christ, or Christendom--coterminous with Western Civilization, rather than simply to wipe out other peoples, and replace them with European man. Do do so would have been to pagan, and primordial master morality, so they did it in the name of love, God, and meekness.
