How did Mongolia almost conquer the world but end up as one of the weakest countries today? How did they lose their huge population also?

Horses used to be a lot more useful than they are now.

also they never had a large population, but a social structure that allowed them to mobilize a much larger percentage of their population than most sedentary civilizations.

Historical fluke, a one-hit wonder.

They split up after the death of the khans. After that, kublai took over and with riches he got from taking China, he didn't want to invest time with the western frontier. He based his empire in China, but then century later, got overthrown by the Chinese.

Once the Chinese got back in power, the mongols could never muster their full potential again due to the fractured tribes. If they had, instead of focused on China exclusively, continued full front assault with the western area, they might have had more luck with a better equipped and unified mongol.

They eventually converted to Buddhism from Mongolian paganism. Not sure how much of an effect that had.

Nope.
China had 3 Golden-Age Dynasties (Han- T'ang- Ming). 4 if you consider the Qing as one. 5 If you really like the Administrative achievements of the Song. But 3 for sure.

Hindu India was a grorious empire under the Maurya and Gupta States.

Persia was established by the Achaemenids, but had 2 (non-Muslim) comebacks as the Parthian and Sassanid Empires.

Rome had the Dominate and later on the Byzantine Renaissance.

Speaking of Non-Imperial "Empires"

Russia arguably had its moments as the Russkie Empire and later on the Soviet Union.

France had a threepeat as well first under Philip Augustus, second under LE SUN King, and finally Napoops and his Empire.

The Mongolian conversion to Buddhism happened later on quite a while after the dissolution of the empire. It was primarily instituted from the top down by khans who wished to assert their legitimacy and sovereignty over their subjects, which is pretty much a common reason for whole scale conversion in many pre-modern societies. As for the effects it had, Buddhism under the Qing Dynasty neutered the male population; by the early 20th century, something like half of the male population in Mongolia were monks. Add on top of that a healthy dose of institutionalised religious dogma and subservience to religious authorities, and you have a pretty docile population, anon.

I know fuck all about Mongolia but did they lose their population or did everyone else just catch up/surpass them?
>>
>>902188
They just left
>>

Everyone already mentioned migrations, but I think the number one reason is that there's only so many people you can support on the steppes. They were already looking for more/better grazing land in the Medieval era after all.
Agricultural societies definitely surpassed nomadic pastoralists centuries ago.

After Temujin's death the Borjigin dynasty split up into several states and ruled independently for hundreds of years. The mongols that remained steppe-fags were never strong enough to be as big a threat as Genghis and his ilk were, due to a lack of unity and technological progress. The 12th/13th century can only happen once, after all.

They spent the last few centuries getting beaten down by China and genocided by Russia.
