I know they did have a name, some guy on /k/ postulated that the celts that armed them and entered Greece and Anatolia were the original inspiration for the "copycat" legions the Romans would encounter there later.
but I don't remember the name, sorry.
Ladies and gentlemen, i present to you, From 16th century England:
The gunshield.

Why do they always have that same fucking white-black cowhide? Did some fag just find one example and since then everyone just goes "yep, that's how all the shield were, all of them".
>>897956
I don't know I didn't make the fucking picture. Fresco's/pottery and shit like that points to the fact that they were likely covered in cowhide, although they probably didn't all look like that. Keep in mind this was in like 1400 BC, so its not like there were just thousand pound bricks of bronze lying around. Also, imagine a shield of that size covered in a layer of bronze similar to an aspis
gg after carrying that around for 5 minutes
>>896980
Why did shields die out bros?
>>898016
They haven't.
>>898016
Because once full plate armor came around, you already had more protection than a shield could ever provide, and this also lets you use two-handed weapons.

Why use a shield when you can BE the shield?

>>898084
It really isn't. They're dealing with 100% complaint people who play along with every move. Virtually EVERY military writer in pre-modern war would tell you just how dangerous passing lines like that is, because if the other guys push, your shit falls the fuck apart.
Rotating our guys has to be done piecemeal in the face of a determined attacker.

Of course they are compliant, its not real, aka practice. But nonetheless it looks cool, and is a video involving modern shields, so it made sense to link it to 2 people talking about modern shields. Please point to the spot in my post where I said that they were using real/sound tactics?
>>898149
Class IIIa esapi plates for modern military members stop up to .308, weigh around 30lbs total, and they only cover torso upper back and sides.
Imagine a shield made out the same material. It would be hundreds of pounds
>>898158
Maybe out of a new, lighter material? Cheap produced carbon fibres? Wait forget cheap it should be the best materials for the one, ultimate shield

>>898177
TOP. FUCKING. KEK.
scutum best shield
>>898100
Hell no.
Rifle rated 10"x12" level III steel armor plates for modern plate carriers weigh ten pounds each.
One for the chest and one for the back, you have 20 pounds.
If you made an entire suit of armor out of rifle rated AR500 steel you wouldn't be able to move.
You might be able to wear leather armor, with some chain mail here and there, combined with a modern plate carrier, but fashioning an entire suit of armor out of rifle rated steel is completely implausible.
>>898084
Kek this video is one of the most retarded things I've ever seen.
>>898324
Kek its not real and looks cool but good try tho
>>898168
Carbon fiber? That's not going to stop any bullets.
It's useless anyway. Somebody could just throw a grenade at you, and even if you plant your shield down to protect against it, the blastwave would still screw you up.
>>898297
Im talking about shields out of modern materials m8
>>898363
Oh, well, you wouldn't be able lift a shield crafted from AR500 steel rated for intermediate rifles.
Soft armor made from materials like Aramid Fibers or Kevlar simply can't stop rifle rounds.
I suppose you could make one from ceramic, but they shatter and fall apart when shot so they can't take multiple hits, and even 10"x12" rifle rated ceramic plates weigh 7.5 pounds.

well there is actually partially a way to see how "Greek" person is. By looking at the facial structure. If they have curly hair with a nose that slopes with the forehead then they have a good amount of ancient Greek heritage, pic related. >>896980
I always liked the buckler. Useless for blocking fast projectiles, but anyone skilled with a buckler will quickly block everything and every blocked attack will quickly end up with a man closing in and stabbing you in the gut.
>>898529
>but anyone skilled with a buckler will quickly block everything
No.
Do you know what the germans called them?
Iron fists.
Do you know why?
Because you were better off using the sword to defend yourself than the actual buckler.
This means the buckler is left free to strike, and you then followup with the sword.
It's better than nothing. A skilled used is not going to "block everything" with it. He might not block anything at all with it.
>yfw born too soon to see soldiers in bullet and explosion-proof steel battle armours that weigh hundreds of kilograms and and inner electronic skeleton helps the warriors to move and fight

>>897571
>>896980
The Greeks, Thracians, and Illyrians called it a "Thureos."
From the Celtic "Skutheos/Skuthikos/Something that starts along fucking sku/scuth." Referring to large oval shields.
Celtic equipment got popularized following the very devastating Celtic raids during the last days of the 300's BC into Italy, Balkans, and Greece. You had whole mediterranean states making new troop types based of Celtshit (i.e. Thureophoroi, the Legions themselves).
Even the warriors themselves were popular. Celtic mercenaries served as far south as Ptolemaic Egypt and as far east as where the Seleucids could take them.

One thing I notice when I look at comparison between legionaries and later period dudes with mail, is that the legionary always has a much shorter mail shirt. Did determine that so much thigh coverage is unnecessary with the huge scutum or something?
>>899809
>>899815
Some people modded Warband into a Rome version but the based game itself was pretty bare-bones and repetitive regardless of modding so it wasn't a super-great mod.
Bannerlord looks to be a lot more detailed and the studio Talesworlds was impressed by the mods put out for Warband, they are both implementing some of the stuff in Warband mods into Bannerlord and they are dedicated to releasing a sophisticated modding tool so we can probably expect that people will eventually make some pretty good Rome mods.

Proper Hellenic Thureos shields. Though adopted from the Celts the Greeks made them their own, giving them a concave shape and distinct central bosses. Usually plain colours rather than any patterns.

is Wankel shield named after Wankel Engine?
Why do people always assume that barbarians fought without armours or even naked? It just doesn't make sense.
>>904300
Celts sort of did.
Except shield + helmet qualifies as armor and a lot of Greeks/Romans plebs fought in a likewise manner. The First Legions wore nothing but some shitty pectoral plate for armor.
>>904305
Celts had excellent armor
Also reminder that the most widely used Roman helmet was originally a Celtic design
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montefortino_helmet
>>904300
Because people don't really question what they see in "historical" movies. And I'm not trying to be condescending; I didn't really question what I "learned" about the CSI from the tv show for the longest time either.
They might also associate the idea of a "primitive barbarian" with, say, natives of Sub-Saharan Africa or America, who run around half naked; pic related is what an English artist from the 1500s assumed the Picts looked like from his time as a colonist
>>903564

>>906538
That sheath is a bit dubious senpai
>>906551
Tell further
>>905210
So, I can maybe, maybe, understand that people might imagine the Picts like that. There are lots of stories of the naked Picts painted in blue and with spiked hair attacking the Romans.
But why do we have that idea for the rest of the Celts? They were the premiere metal smiths of their time, especially when dealing with iron and steel, and they were well known for their trousers.

it's weird how true this is.
greeks are rook same.
I dated a girl who was half greek and I couldn't stop staring at her side profile. for reference boxxy is part greek
>>904300
Some did due to religious reasons or because they were high as fuck before battle (like the Gaesatae). But all in all, it's not even that weird. I mean, greeks fought naked a lot before and after their golden era, mostly because if you have no armor, it's better to be naked than to be clothed (since clothes can infect a wound).
But yeah, it's mostly romebooism.
Also, on a sidenote related to this, I know it's a meme and I shouldn't take it seriously, but I find the whole WE WUZ thing annoying as fuck. As in, I'm mad about the fact that people are making fun of these new series of studies about obscure or subjugated cultures that never got attention of the academia due to insufficient epistemology and methodology to do so or due to prejudice.
And it's not like it's a completly useless line of thought even if you are a romeboo or greekboo or whatever, since learning about how these other cultures interacted with them can really explain a lot about the culture of the romans/greeks/other hegemonic power of the time.
I know there are extreme cases of revisionism like the whole "hannibal was black" thing, which is completly retarded, but most of the time it's reasonable stuff.
