Good history program desu
>>

Just saw this video about some shithead at the 'ol Alma Mater. Business school students can all go off themselves imo (plus, any job you can get with a degree in business you can get with a degree in literally anything else).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12VeNY-QoYA
>>
Why are you doing this?
>>
>take a class on Byzantine History
>get a old-ass professor thats literally waiting to retire with tenure
>he rants about how the Bulgarians are the scum of the earth, how Disneyland is worse than concentration camps, and talks about the various Turks as if they they were nothing more than vicious animals
>one kid from Turkey takes offense to this
>professor doesn't apologize and tells him to piss off because he's not the turks from the past so equating himself to the medieval turks would be disparaging himself
>half the class drops the class in protest
>he announces that he will basically hand out As as long as you hand something in for your final paper that has at least some effort in it

what a wild ride

Well, to be fair, fellow Flipanon you can't deny that colonialism did fuck us up. Though admittedly, the whole focus towards distilling "muh pure indigenous culture" is ridiculous.

That being said, UP is pretty bourgeois now compared to just a decade or two ago. Middle class families and rich Chinese families try to get their kids in to swipe a free lunch because state-subsidized tuition.

>STEM is a lot more intellectually stimulating than anything in the humanities

You are a retarded person - STEM is valuable and intellectually vibrant in its own way, but dismissing literally all non-technical human endeavor including literature, music, art, philosophy, history, etc etc as less "stimulating" is mega-retarded.

I don't understand why STEMlords like you feel the need to crow about your perceived superiority at every opportunity. I have never known a single person in the humanities as dismissive and arrogant about the sciences as STEM posters are about the humanities. They're both equally valuable.

For instance, this would be dumb as well:
>The humanities are a lot more intellectually stimulating than anything in the STEM. There's a reason that people who read or think critically flock to STEM subjects...
>>

>>907605
I've definitely met some hella pretentious poets, historians and, worst of em all, poli sci students. Their arrogance isn't usually predicated on a feeling of superiority to different majors.

STEM is the forefront of human knowledge and advancement. The humanities is for retards that feel special but don't have the intellectual capacity to engage in anything other than arguing about history. It's alright to participate in humanities discussions during leisure, but it is a shame for any man to pursue anything in the humanities as his life's goal. I am not crowing about any perceived superiority, I am simply trying to encourage twats such as yourself into STEM with some tough love.

>they're both equally valuable

Absolutely not. One requires a high intellectual level to participate in and the other, well, is for people who can not do the former.

>>
>>907632
The entire context of your existance is contingent on the humanities. Where you came from, who you are, the entire history of your people and nation, the nature of the morality of you actions, those are all questions that are discussed and answered by humanities scholars.

STEM is a means. Humanities is an end.
>>
>>907632
As we speak you are doing very poor philosophy in an attempt to justify your position. Let's talk about history though.

If you really think proper historical scholarship can be done in a person's off-time you have zero idea of how rigorous the process is. And I doubt most scholars in the humanities are concerned with how difficult or how much of an IQ score is required to do their jobs. It's just the field they're interested in.

The same goes for real scientists by the way. I've only ever seen this attitude among dickwaving STEM undergrads.
>>
>>907672
That's cause the job market for law and I/O psychology is already flooded. If you took econ or a basic math course you would understand this
>>
>>907686

No, it's not. I'd do just fine without any of that useless babble, thank you very much. Like I said, the humanities do not produce anything remotely close to worthwhile, unlike STEM. It's really sad that most young members of our Western society are encouraged to participate in college humanities departments for the sole purpose of feeling special, since they cannot ultimately participate in a masterful discipline: STEM.

>>907708

Historical scholarship is what exactly? Oh, that's right, just a meaningless pursuit of a subjective discipline wherein anyone can say anything and make it sound like it isn't a bunch of nonsense.
>>
>>903320

IKR, undergrads in general are shocking for pissing contests, different degrees, different majors, colleges, campuses, universities.

See it worst around campus with law and engineering kiddies though, they seem to constantly need to justify their (more accurately their parents') unfulfilling and passionless decision with "muh starting salary".

>STEM is a lot more intellectually stimulating than anything in the humanities.

Maybe if you're top level research scientist or a mathematician dealing with a highly abstract concept space but otherwise, no chance. Most of the time a STEM graduate would try to fit natural phenomena or logical structures into a simplified model that a smarter research scientist has thought of and apply the equations of that model, as conceived by that person, relative to the situation at hand. Pattern recognition, in other words. Oh and use a calculator in the process.

I've only taken one GRS course, Alexander and the Hellenistic Age with Kron - I'd recommend taking a class with him. He likes to bring in a lot of statistical data derived from archaeology (eg. house sizes) and draw comparisons with modern societies, which I enjoy.

As for the SJWs, yeah it can be seem intense if you follow campus politics, but I wouldn't say I've noticed much/any of that in my courses. Obviously if you were to take women's studies you would, but even in Canadian history, which I would assume has a less traditional student base, it's fine

Teddy Hall here. Two blokes from my college pissed on your quad about 3 weeks ago. Agreed on the work ethic tho.

Don't see a problem with this. Never heard of a mathematician who remembers how to do long division without deriving the principle.

I got to QMUL

KCL is the butt of many jokes. What a fucking joke uni.
>>
>>907122
What classes are you doing? I'm a History honours student and have done most of the units/are familiar with most of the faculty if you want advice senpai

You go over a lot of cool stuff in first year (that you'll likely use throughout your degree), so make sure you're actually paying attention
>>
>>912270
Are you trolling?

That's an actual question. That's because I can believe that a QMUL student might not be trolling, but may suffer from actual retardation
>>
>>910833
>>910883
Cheers guys, looking forward to it.
>>
>>912292

I'm currently doing the Old Worlds unit along with some entry-tier European Studies, Linguistics, and Political Science. The information is great, I usually get great stuff from lectures, but I'm simply not as invested in the pre-modern material as other parts of history
>>
>>912270
Now I'm not from the UK, but KCL seems to moderately outrank QMUL in most rankings, and completely blows out QMUL in several. Why do the rankings not represent the reality for you?

Following on from:
>>907913
Took a wrong turn and walked up one floor too many, saw a presumably homeless guy sprawled on the floor upstairs in my uni's maths and physics building.

Bit fucking annoying really, that sort of brazen behaviour will only ruin it for those of us who pass out on a quiet couch somewhere after a big night on the piss on campus.
>>
>>906056
Literally only applied because I wanted an easy uni to get into as a second choice. Glad I did because I fucked up my A levels and I get an extra year of avoiding adulthood.

yeah also as far as student life goes, it's pretty solid. I went to McGill for a couple years and the people here are a lot...friendlier. Plus if you like doing stuff outside this is the place to be
>>
>>912583
Thats just how it is.
KCL -> Makes top teir employees
QMUL -> Makes top tier employeers

Yeah that unit is a bit of a slog but it gets better towards the end IIRC. Are you doing the Liberal Democratic State?

I know an absolute troublemaker / Joker who was blonde called Jack C, it probably isn't the same person as I think he's still there.
