What if Siege of Constantinople (1453) failed? Would Bizantine Empire recover entire Anatolia?
>>
>>896336
No.

No, they would have most likely simply have been conquered later. There really was no chance for them to ever regain their glory.
>>
>>896336
They'd be completely surrounded by the enemy, half starving, and with most of their defenders dead.
>>
>>896336
They were to lavish, heavily in debt with no way of restructuring their finances. Nope.
>>
A better question would be if the 4th crusade never happened or had failed at the siege of Constantinople.
>>
>>896394
Now that is the question. A Byzantine empire capable of focusing its efforts on crushing the turks rather than fighting to retake Constantinople for about a century would possibly exist today in some form.
The greatest tragedy in western history is the fall of the city
>>
>>896888
That's not World War I
>>
By the time 1400 rolled around, the Empire was little more than the City itself and a few possessions in southern Greece, the Ottomans cannon technology and sheer manpower had the overwhelming advantage over the Byzantines. and the Catholics were in no hurry to help them after the bad blood of the 4th Crusade and the Byzantine conquest of the Latin Empire.

You have to hand to them though, the Byzantines fought on to the very last, and even killing half of the Turkish siege force if the records are to be believed.

But if you're talking about what if the siege itself failed, the Ottomans would just stage another. The Fall of Constantinople wasn't the first time the Ottomans reached the city, with 1 or 2 other failed sieges that the Byzantines defeated

in no universe would this be possible

Constantinople was utterly trashed to the point where it wasn't even a city, it was just a couple of villages inside crumbling walls, with an emperor that ruled literally what they could see from those walls as well as a couple of backwater greek provinces.

They had no army, that was gone. They only had the garrison of the City and the Emperor leading them.

They had no economy, that was gone. Their income has been completely shot with the Sack of the Fourth Crusade and events from thereon out.

They had no friends. They were surrounded on all sides by the Ottomans and what pleas for help they could get out to the west were readily ignored. Everyone basically knew Byzantium was just going to be something you'd read about in the history books, and they didn't care anymore, they lost the only bargaining chip they ever had after the Sack of Constantinople- they weren't a bulwark against the Turk menace anymore.

Even if the Siege of Constantinople had failed, it would have just left the Byzantine "Empire" starving and stagnating until they came back and tried again.

Why does this thread make me incredibly sad?
>>
>>896956
Because an entire civilisation was snuffed out?
>>
>>896956
because OP asked a question that had no happy answer.

The Byzantines were in a pathetic, backwater state that clung hopelessly to past glories and heritage. They were the last flame of a thousand-year long legacy, one that brought civilization to much of the western world. Now they sit at the brink of destruction, reminiscing about the past and watching the Turks they have been fighting so long swallow everything up and now sit at their gates, ready to finish them off.

Because it's hopeless

No cavalry to save everyone at sunrise

I always laugh at the fact that Byzaboos don't realize that Venice was the heir of the Empire.

Try 2000 years. It is truly remarkable that the Roman Empire was born in the middle of Classical Antiquity, and the fall of Rome and Constantinople marked the beginning of the Middle Ages and the end of the Middle Ages (and start of the Modern world as we know it) respectively. It's age and impact on the Western World is undeniable.Even Ancient Egypt, despite lasting 1000 more years, seems relatively small in consequence in the grand scheme of it all
>>
>>897028
Get behind the Germans, Turks and Russian in the line of delusion.
>>
If they had a few Von Neumann tier engineers creating new technology, a Metternich tier diplomat, a Frederick the Great tier Emperor (except with sons like Shimazu Takahisa had, instead of that failure of a successor he had), maybe they could do something.
>>
>>896394
No because the Angeloi were massive fuck ups. The Byzantine Empire died with Basil II at the very latest. It arguably died at Yarmouk.
>>
>>897029
We're reading this in their alphabet, and half the words we're using come from their language.
>>
They never recovered from the black death. The just didn't have the working/fighting age male population to get the economic and military strength to survive.
>>
>>897029
>the byzantines were roman

oh I am keking

please, tell me about how the british are germans because they call themselves anglo-saxon

>cultures don't evolve
Come on now.
>>
>>896378
too lavish? By the time the city fell the emperor had glass jewels. No one lived lavishly there.
The problem was that they had literally no territory.
>>
>>897858
Don't be retarded.
>>
>>896394
They'd still be sitting around fighting with turks and bulgarians, and the greeks wouldn't be a nation of oxygen thieves.

>>897489
Given that the empire managed to be resurgent more than once, no. Had they been in a position to wage significant offensive war when the mongols attacked the middle east, god only knows what would have happened.

Using invading steppe nomads to weaken or destroy their foes was what they'd been good at for centuries-you could end up with anything from total mongol conquest of near asia and the empire, to a resurgent empire retaking egypt.
>>
>>897852
By the time the black death hit, they were already in a completely impossible position. No 4th crusade means no balkanization a century prior causing the loss of massive amounts of territory, money, and manpower.
>>
>>898232
Impossible. When it fell it was engulfed by the Ottomans, the only thing that could have saved them would have been massive internal strife among the Ottomans or intervention from the west that didn't end with a new Latin Empire.
>>
>>898261
I'm talking about the 4th crusade not happening.

The empire was dead before the final siege, we agree on that.
>>
>>897896
>>897919
They were greek linguistically and culturally, the romans didn't assimilate everyone they conquered.
>>
>>896956
Because you're a byzaboo nigger
4th crusade did nothing wrong and the Byzantine Empire was garbage
