The Long Ships by Bengtsson is as adventure as you can get. Quite a page turner, memorable characters and events. Just a great read.

If you want something actually written by a historical person, Equiano's autobiography, the Interesting Narrative, is a really cool account of life as a slave in pre-colonial Africa and the Americas. He also talks about his life in the English Navy during the Seven Years' War.
