On this day, Easter Sunday in 1457, Prince Vladimir Tepes III of Wallachia, known as both Vlad Dracula and Vlad the Impaler earned his name and his vengeance.
The Wallachian Boyars sold out his father, Vlad Dracul, to the Ottoman Sultan resulting in Vlad being kept as hostage until installed in his father's place with the intent of being a vassal lord and puppet ruler.
These were invited to a lavish dinner party held by Prince Vlad. All of them, over 500 men, were enslaved and forced to rebuild the fortress overlooking the Arges River. Any who survived, were impaled alive around his kingdom, as a prelude to his campaign against the Ottomans.

The nobles turned on Vlad Dracul, then he went to the Ottomans for help, then ultimately got sold out to the Ottomans who took his sons as prisoners. He was beheaded by the nobles along with his eldest son.
Vlad Dracula spent quite a bit of time in captivity and was educated by the Ottomans (some suspect he may have been raped which is where his obsession with impaling stemmed) and then was put on the throne to be a puppet for the Ottoman Empire. It didn't last long and he went to the court of his uncle Prince Bogdan who was also assassinated.
Needless to say at this point, Dracula really didn't like turks and he especially didn't like the nobles. So he returned to Wallachia and killed the turk friendly Voivode and reclaimed the throne.

also he kept the noblemen at bay so he had a very long reign, 47 years
but he was a rather poor diplomat. his battles pretty much destroyed the land owning peasants as two generation fought for him and many died. in the end moldova had to pay a rather large tribute and had no chance of opposing the neighboring powers
so on the short run he was great but on the long run not so much
