The idea of Russia being anything besides an abnormally large European country is only propagated by butthurt European federalists in the west and Russian nationalists.

It's not historically unheard of though, Britain went through similar stuff with their extra-European Anglo-Saxon colonies and seeing themselves as being their own thing instead of as Europeans.
