Taxes were a big fuckin' part of the deal. Local property arrangements. I think growing influence of Islam manifested in a way that tried to break up the father/son Zoroastrian priesthoods, but I don't remember what or how, and could be off base by a lot.

That's only true for Parsis in India, because of an agreement they supposedly had at one point with a local ruler. Even then this agreement was overturned recently.
The other Zoroastrian community in India, the Iranis, has no bar on new converts. Same for Zoroastrians in Iran.
The Sassanid empire successfully proselytized other peoples too. Sure, it wasn't on Christian or Muslim level, but it did happen.

When refering to Zoroastrianism I prefer the epithet the Good Religion, because it constrasts neatly with the evil religions such as three-fold Abrahamism: the one religion with three names or the one snake with three heads: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Iranian legend speaks (prophetically?) about a three-headed snake.

According to Flowers, in Zoroastrianismm the souls are not down here in the material world due to sin, but voluntarily. Muslims were preferred over the previous Persian rulers, because they're taxes were low and the Muslims allowed self rule. And then you could get an even bigger tax break for converting to Islam. Also, you have to be born into Zoroastrianism to be a part of the religion.
lastly, mosques for about 600 years were the best places for the poor to get food and clothes and help of any kind. Christianity was small in the region, and Zoroastrianism and Christianity did not have as good of a social safety net as the Muslims did.
Stop projecting European faults onto everyone else. Only European religious cultures represses other religions. Muslims only started repressing other religions when they started to try to act like Europeans.
