When did your state become cultured? I live in a state with a long history. It was a manifest destiny state (Illinois), because I think we bought Illinois from the natives. The nation has landlocked states, but we have lot's of rivers and mountains too. (Misssippi reporting in)

Despite what people would have you believe, this is actually a really fucking great place to live.
Let me tell you all a little something before Ohio shows up, though. In the early days, before Michigan was cordoned off into a territory for the first time, the land came from the French, as well as containing a large amount of native americans, which made some wary to invest heavily into what was - in effect - a largely abandoned northern property bordering nations and territories with which the US was uneasy. In other terms, why would people invest in putting outposts, towns, etc. not only where they could be raided, but also far away from the influence of larger eastern cities and communities.
Now Ohio actually worked against developing Michigan. Edward Tiffin, the surveyor general of Ohio, was sent by congress to investigate the quality of the land, because at that time congress was awarding land to veterans and wanted to use the influx of families to colonize their western territories. Tiffin reported back to congress that Michigan was a swampy land of garbage "not worth one hundredth" of the land he was accustomed to in his southerly properties. By his suggestion, the veterans were instead awarded land in - surprise - Ohio and largely Indiana, bringing their population up considerably, while leaving Michigan with... pretty much only Detroit for decades.
Ohio went a step further when they stole Toledo away from us too. The issue comes from the surveyors who separated the northwest territories into Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The border between Michigan and Ohio was set as "an eastern line from the southern tip of Lake Michigan, to reach Lake Erie." When Ohio found out how far south Lake Michigan reached, they actually edited their state border to tilt northeast and when surveyors drew state lines, they received incorrect instructions and made Ohio considerably larger, leading to a dispute involving legitimate military occupation

Michigan was basically bullied into giving up to Ohio's demands, seeing as Ohio was a state and Michigan was a territory (and lacked any representatives and congressmen with which to leverage). The conflict escalated to the point where Andrew Jackson offered statehood in return for giving up the Toledo strip, despite the fact that all requirements for statehood essentially were fulfilled by Michigan regardless.
Anyway, that's the story of how Michigan became a state and how we were set back 50 years by Ohio and why people still hate that fucking smug piece of shit state and why Detroit was the only real center of population for so long.

Greatest state in the south... Not to many rednecks, blacks are somewhat tolerable, good colleges, getting good grades in state tests is easy (Thanks to Memphis) and a good economy. Can be pretty beautiful as well sometimes.

I guess we became cultured in 1848 when a bunch of Germans came over and we got statehood. We had the first kindergarten in the US, and we actually advertised in Germany to attract liberals after the failed revolution in 1848. We're also the birthplace of the Republican party.
We're monocultured in that even newer immigrants assimilate pretty quickly. Our politics are chaos, with a liberal history (progressive income tax, universal education) and liberal centers in Milwaukee and Madison, but the rest of the state is so Christian it hurts. We have a lotof Catholics, and the first openly homosexual senator. We also have a governor without a college degree.
The Packers have killed our culture.
