Though assuming the rulers manage to keep their rule, this usually peters out and the citizens become content, eventually forgetting and even identifying themselves as members of the ruling class, though this would be much harder when they're clearly fucking aliens.

What do you mean by 'better?' More efficient? More organized? More equal? What really matters is freedom. Humans have survived societies of low-living conditions for pretty much all of human history, but the arts, the humanities, only could flourish under freedom. Post-Stalin, post-Mao, post-Hitler art and literature suffered, society suffered, if the aliens took our freedom we would be morally obligated to resist.
