Name a greater ruler.
Protip: You can't.
He casualized Christianity to make it appeal to the pagan masses.
He is responsible for Roman Catholicism and the dark tyranny of the Papacy.
Fuck him.

Verism was a style during the the republic primarily, it gave the person depicted a sense of gravitas and authority. It must be stated verism was not REALISTIC it was just idealised the other way. Older men were expected to be experienced and having large deep wrinkles made you look more thoughtful and trustworthy, exactly the sorts of things which were regarded highly during the height of the Republic.
When Augustus becomes emperor he begins depicting himself in the style of the Greek Basileus because it 1) makes him look how one expects "kings" to look, and 2) is the sort of art style expected by his Eastern/Greek subjects. It also gives him the touch of divinity claimed by Greek kings (and how both Greek and Roman gods were depicted, wrinkle and blemish free) which adds to his claim to be descended from divinity.
Then it becomes accepted and Roman nobility follows the trends of the emperor.
