What does /his/ do for work? Did you ever realize your dream of studying history, or did you sell out?

>>
I work in a genetics lab doing cell culture work.

I work in GIS for the local natural resources department. I want to write a biography of Aurelian and an analysis of the German-Roman racial dichotomy in the fifth century through a series of biographies about the generals that guided both the East and West. Maybe something about the roles Galla Placidia and Eudocia played in paving the way for a stronger role of women in the Byzantine era. But all this stuff has been done a million times over and I doubt I have the mental capacity to pull it off
>>
Why would you want to study history as your job? That would fucking ruin it for me.

I am an energy auditor who makes his living off of commissions from selling home energy efficiency upgrades. I go into people's homes, root around in the guts of the house, and then calculate how much money they would save a year in heating/air conditioning costs if they upgrade and strengthen their thermal envelop.

It's fucking brutal work, a hustle like you wouldn't believe, but I make about 75k a year and not very many people can say that about their commission-only sales job.

And my love of history and the humanities has proven absolutely invaluable to me as a salesman, both in direct and indirect ways. For example, in January I met an elderly couple whose names and heritage I correctly identified as Lithuanian. Turns out they met as young kids in the aftermath of World War 2 and fled to the United States to escape persecution from the communists, as she was the daughter of a very wealthy Lithuanian businessman, and was therefor a target. Building rapport is an extremely important part of my job, and knowing the background and context of their story helped me to connect with them in a way that fostered mutual trust and understanding, and you'll do and say what needs to be said in order to get them to sign on the dotted line for a 3,500 dollar home improvement project. Having that expansive understanding of the humanities has helped me so many times with so many clients, that story about the elderly Lithuanians is just the tip on the iceberg.

People smart enough to have ended up as homeowners tend to be utterly fascinated with history. That's an extremely common point of connection that I can make with everyone from granola-eating lesbians and their adopted black babies, to the retired police captain watching Fox News, to geeky tech dweebs with their geeky tech dweeb party-basements, to the retired Navy officer whose home is stacked with authentic Japanese memorabilia.

I plan to work for a theatre creating period costumes. Ideally for an Opera/Ballet society in Götteburg or Stockholm.

It really, really, really, really helps when you are selling a product that you actually believe in.

I tried selling knives for Cutco and felt filthy afterwards, mostly because their management are stingy tightwad cunts who make the salesmen generate their own leads by chasing down out of touch family and friends and they don't actually train their salespeople, they just get them to memorize a script. And at the end of the day all you were selling is overpriced junk.

The products that I am selling actually make the homeowner money over time because it reduces their month to month operating expenses. It's also good for the environment because more efficient homes burn less fuel to maintain.

Nah, all of those kind of jobs are filled with women making 12 - 5 dollars an hour who sit at a desk and manage the mountains of paperwork that I shovel onto their desk once a week.

I am actually in the home, making the measurements with a laser measure, and getting the homeowner fucking excited about forking over a couple grand. That's why I'm perfectly happy being paid commission, and I make a comfortable living doing so.

Sometimes I fucking wish I was a bookkeeper though. I remember what it feels like sitting at a desk and knowing exactly how much money was going to be in my paycheck 2 weeks from the present. When you don't have that stability you gotta fucking hustle or you don't eat. You learn real quick how to tighten your belt.

WHO ELSE /PUBLIC HISTORY/ HERE?

I've just got my foot in the door of public history with a teaching program at a historical park. I taught English last year abroad, and now I'm here in the USA again putting those skills to work teaching kids all about history and why it's important. Best of all, I get to do that without being dragged into the public school system. I'm hoping to work in museums eventually with educational programming, but the field is so crowded that you need to work around and gain experience until you can advance somewhere. I went into this degree knowing that, but at least things are really looking up now and all that work is paying off.

Feels great, man.

It does give you a leg up to get into the foreign service. according to my adviser/boss at my post, if you can get good recs from them (and the consul-general who runs the post) that will help a lot when you actually apply to the foreign service. At the end of the day you have to pass the foreign service exams too, which seem kinda difficult, though I'm sure if your motivated you can pass.
>>
>>880257
To be honest, I was in the right place at the right time. One was just opening up and they had reasonably low standards for interns. HOWEVER, other anon is right about the FS having a good internship program. Depending on your grades/program/location there are plenty of think tanks to choose from. I advise looking at intern websites for DC and checking their options. Can I ask what school/year you are?

Not Czech which is the best part. They put on various exhibitions, performing arts, visual arts, book readings, movie screenings etc. (The catch being that all these events must involve some Czech element) So my job is basically two-fold, build their social media presence and help coordinate those events.
>>
>>880264
and you could certainly use the internship in general on your resume i'm sure. also this is just a random, /pol/tier observation but there seems to be a lot of fags in the foreign service. my advisor was a fag (he greeted me with his partner when i got off the plane), the consular officer was a fag, and I'm certain the consul general was a fag. Personally, I'm not that comfortable with that, but apparently the FS attracts lots of gays because they get to sample different gay cultures because they get transferred to new posts every two years. And overhearing the fags talking, they like that because they get to fuck all the gays at their posts or some shit. If you gay I imagine it must be a dream job, though, mormons also love the job cause they have tons of kids and the FS provides them with free housing, and in 3rd world posts cheap domestic labor, and general "gibsmedat" stuff.

Am I the only one getting a masters degree in History?
Students are mostly SJWs and commies but professors and people who actually know what they're doing motivate me. I wouldn't study History if I wasn't in a very good environment for learning and improving.

Lawfag also here
Depending on the country law studies are either designed to teach you what you actually have to do when confronted to a client, or extremely theoretical and mind-numbing because you spend hours studying particular points that will never ever be useful to you.
Right at the start of your studies you should ask which law field actually hires (criminal law is always overcrowded, fiscal or foreign law are better). Good thing is at the end you'll be able to read any document existing and understand it (not scientifical articles tho), and you'll realize that 90% of what politicians do is pure bullshit
>>
>>879984

Common people think that current politicians are rotten and stupid, while previous politicians were obviously better. Lawfags reach a level of bitterness so high they realize that even founding fathers of any country really knew nothing about writing laws, and that most articles of the country's constitution could have been better written wouldn't it be for the petty concerns of the redactors at the time

Worst thing is when you understand that this level of unprofessionalism is actually essential in a democracy, since people who aren't law savvy prefers a system that flatter their egos with empty phrases over one which improves the organization of society

The "everything" capacity. On PAPER I'm "reception" but since there's a budget crisis going on I'm a curation assistant, budget review, reception management, building exhibits, and anything else they want me doing. We've got a pretty fuckhuge collection to. I get the impression the only people who know how good it is are the patrons and the people working here.

So far this semester I've got all A's and 1 B (it's an 88). I'm used to making 96-99 in all classes, so I feel pretty challenged. One of the TAs who grades my projects is a nitpicky cunt and I have to email him to get points back all the time. Another one of my teachers fucks up the note slides all the time which cost me some points on our test. So, I've just started reading the book instead.

I teach US/Western Euro history at a suburban Catholic high school/my alma mater.

Pays not as nice as a public school, but the kids are so better behaved that it's worth it if just for the lack of stress they cause me and how easy it is to create lessons. Plus I started dating one of the English teachers, last few years have been pretty good to me /his/
>>
>>882436

Funny thing is that I did start out at ICT engineering, but swapped to social sciences and now have better job prospects. Certain country had one of their major exports vanish in thin air and I have no interest in trying to compete for the few jobs available against people who are willing to put more hours to coding and have better networking skills.

I do after a certain number of years and if I ever get my MA in history(the school pays for my required continuing education so I'll eventually get an MA in secondary ed. too), don't really know off the top of my head what those increases are though.

Should clarify this point, it's technically an MA in education with a particular focus (you can choose), I'm going with administration because it's really the only practical focus to choose even though I have no desire to work in admin.

Currently I work for ClubCorp as a server. Trying to get shit done so I can become a translator. It sucks to learn a few languages and then be told that you aren't really needed for it.

First language is English, the rest are as follows:
German
Croatian
Tongan
Samoan
Spanish.

Only the last one is relevant anywhere in the USA.

I finished my time in the USMC, finished my degree, got a wonderful job in the East Asian country of my non-weeaboo dreams, I'm extremely in shape, been doing martial arts for years now, dress extremely well, am fluent in 4 languages, beat autism and can get along fine with most people, go to clubs, party, and pick up chicks like a chad, have fucked dozens of women, and yet here I am every day at least for a little while, like when I was a chubby little neckbeard in 9th grade.

It's because this is...our home. It will always be our home.

I design solar energy systems. Mostly residential, although in the near future I'd like to work on utility scale and micro grid stuff.

I always loved the humanities, but I got a bit of a reality check after I got kicked out of boarding school for smoking pot and had to get a job and support myself after my dad threw me out of the house. Working in fast food and doing manual labor on the side is no way to live, so I promised myself I would do what it took to be able to provide a comfortable living for myself and my family when the time came.

I got a GED and thankfully got accepted to a good state college on a partial scholarship and student loans. I busted my hump, interned for years, and here I am.

I turned down some grad school offers in order to enter the workforce for now. Job experience is always good, but the real reasons I declined are personal. I would like to return to grad school though. I'd like to do something involving computer modelling of economic/social systems.

Studying history is my hobby.
