Nihilism is the result of a culture insulated with comfort and pleasure.
We evolved to live in a painful state, in one way or another, the majority of time. Hungry, hot/cold, diseased, thirsty, horny. Everything is a drive to keep alive and keep going for biological success.
As civilization blossomed, we developed ways to fulfill those needs better and easier. Industrialism brought nihilism because the majority of society could fulfill their material comforts with technology.
Now food is abundant, porn is everywhere, our health is closely monitored, our houses are climate controlled, and our emotions can easily checked by a doctor.
We did not evolve to be this comfortable. Comfort and pleasure eat away at the human need to fight for life. We feel that there is no reason to continue fighting, everything is satisfactory.
