In fact: they don't have a word for serfdom. The word for peasant is "Nongfu" meaning "Agrarian Laborer."
While there were landlords and tenant farmers, the mass of Chinese peasants worked for their village. They had a stake for doing so because everyone in an average Rural Chinese Village of the Imperial Era was fucking related. Slacking off means your whole collective family starves.

Oh and to be fair, I really don't get why the Opium War happened. It's not as if the Chinese were not into drug use. Marijuana, shrooms, and coca leaves were pretty popular, especially Marijuana. The fucking Bong was invented by Thai/Tai and Sino-Burmese Tribesmen that lived in what is now Southern Chhina. Opium wasn't unknown either: the bloody pipes predated the Opium War. Didn't the government bann Chinks from buying Western gods, the Anglos really wanted Chink goods, so they began to mass produce opium to export to the chinks since that was pretty hard to stop for the Chinkine government?
