When Roman beat Carthage the first time around they didn't even have navy while Carthage was the premier naval power of the day, and the various Greek states that Rome conquered were usually far more technologically advanced than the Romans, not to mention many of the things we consider typically "Roman" were aped or outright copied from other peoples including "barbarians". The irony of the entire thing is that it was the Mongols that would embrace actual persian culture and would make persian the official language of the Ilkhanate after centuries of arabic in the region. So in a sense they were good for them.
But they still removed Abbasid/arab rule over the ME forever and the surviving family members in Cairo became the mascots of the Mamlukes until they died out in 1500 AD.
