What is historical scholarship like in the PRC today?

Are all scholars basically expected to toe the line and conform to what the state wants, or is there room for criticism, opposing viewpoints and perhaps even revisionism?

History is pretty much free now in China.

That is: anything that's below the 20th Century. A lot of limits are set on the history China in that period.

Though the past 20 years there have been some changes.
>The Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution was stupid.
>BUT IT WASNT MAO'S FAULT. NOR THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT. CORRUPT LOCAL OFFICIALS AND OVERZEALOUS RED GUARD MANIACS WERE AT FAULT.
>Before = Chiang Kai-shek is a capitalist dog and a pet of the Americans.
>NOPE CHIANG KAI-SHEK IS A GOOD CHINESE NATIONALIST WHO DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO FOR THE BEST. EXCEPT CORRUPT GENERALS AND FOREIGN INTERFERENCE LED TO HIS FAILURE AND ALIENATION FROM CHINESE PEOPLE.

Interesting.

Didn't it occur to ChiCom apparatchiks that you can politicize pre-20th century historiography just as well?

I'm pretty sure they still hate Chiang Kai Shek, there okay with the predecessor Sun Yat Sen

Well you see, the PRC under Mao failed to deliver the Golden Age of Equal Share Fo Erryone that was supposedly superior than the Age of Empire. So now the Chinese are back to "Muh Hallowed Ancestors and Muh Ancient Civilization." Which was previously fucking outlawed.

Though they do use the Qing Borders for some of the territorial claims.

Nah, its changing. Largely because the PRC is trying to improve ties with Taiwan.

Is there a moment in world history as crazy as the Cultural Revolution?

There is huge revisonism around Chiang Kai Shek, recent movies depict Chiank as a honorary figure who got fucked by bad advisors and shitty allies(USA)
Many mainlanders visit Taipei to pay respect to Chiang while Taiwanese cucks insist they are not Chinese.

The Cultural revolution was just repeating what happens in China every time a new dynasty comes into power. What makes it shocking is that it happened so recently.

This 2012 movie depicts the KMT man in a pretty sympathetic line, though he is shown to be slightly clueless about the rampant corruption in his regime.
The villains on the Chinese side are mainly lower rank officers abusing their powers and corrupt civil servants.

>Taiwanese cucks insist they are not Chinese

Taiwanese here, to be fair, Taiwanese were technically Japanese citizens (second-class, of course) during WWII. Then the KMT came and made them second-class citizens again. If another group came and fucked the Taiwanese over, they would probably look upon the KMT fondly.

Of course, it also helps that Taiwanese are the biggest weebs on the planet. Probably the biggest unsaid shame (if you're not a weeb) of Taiwan.
>>

So the question is are you pre-KMT Taiwanese who was cucked by the Japs, or a KMT-descended cuck claiming to not be Chinese?
>>
>>1062309
Half and half, which is probably why I'm not as sympathetic to the Japanese. The reality is that while we have our own identity, it's not that old of an identity. A lot of the older generation of Taiwanese knew that they were "Chinese" in a cultural sense and were actually looking forward to becoming part of the broader country again until the KMT fucked everything up. Comparatively speaking, the KMT was shit compared to the Japanese in terms of administration efficiency. This is where a lot of the resentment comes from.

The more reasonable youth know that both the Blues and Greens are totally shit and there needs to be a third actual liberal party to get shit done. We were far ahead of South Korea in the 90's, but the political squabbling really hurt the economy.
