R.J. Rummel: 11.5M total deaths in the war

Alan McFarlane, The Savage Wars of Peace: England, Japan and the Malthusian Trap (2003): Population of Germany went from 21M to13.5M. . [a loss of 7.5M]

For comparison

In 2005 the German government Suchdienste (Search Service) put the total combined German military and civilian war dead at 7,375,800, including persons of German ancestry who lived outside of the borders of Germany and Austria.[14]

The concept of the “state” is a political construct, enshrined in the treaty of Westphalia in 1648 to bring to an end the 30 years war in Europe.

The treaty gave legal independence to the constituent states of the Holy Roman Empire, allowing them to sign treaties and wage wars, with the exception that they should not bear arms against the emperor.

The main casualty of this was the Kingdom of Sweden, as it then was, which was rather fond of sending the troops across to the GErman states for a spot of rape and pillage.

But as Voltaire pointed out,the nominal Holy Roman Empire was none of the preceding and this allowed German states like Prussia to make war, and finally eclipse the empire

It was fucked. Think of a lower tech WW1/WW2

There is an argument that can be made that the World Wars can be grouped together and be called the Second Thirty Years War.

the ottoman empire helped sending 30.000 cavalry to one of the protestant princes, bohemia i think

>In the east, the Protestant Hungarian Prince of Transylvania, Gabriel Bethlen, led a spirited campaign into Hungary with the support of the Ottoman Sultan, Osman II. Fearful of the Catholic policies of Ferdinand II, Gabriel Bethlen requested a protectorate by Osman II, so "the Ottoman Empire became the one and only ally of great-power status which the rebellious Bohemian states could muster after they had shaken off Habsburg rule and had elected Frederick V as a Protestant king".[32] Ambassadors were exchanged, with Heinrich Bitter visiting Constantinople in January 1620, and Mehmed Aga visiting Prague in July 1620. The Ottomans offered a force of 60,000 cavalry to Frederick and plans were made for an invasion of Poland with 400,000 troops in exchange for the payment of an annual tribute to the Sultan.[33] These negotiations triggered the Polish–Ottoman War of 1620–21.[34] The Ottomans defeated the Poles, who were supporting the Habsburgs in the Thirty Years' War, at the Battle of Cecora in September–October 1620

Pretty much the kings and princes of Europe decided a bit of fisticuffs was in order and decided to host this gran bout in Germany.

Some people didn't even know what side they wanted to be on and just punched whoever was closest to them at the time and changed teams before they could retaliate.

As Germany was hosting the tournament they had to feed and entertain all the competitors resulting in towns being captured by five different armies in a week and every one of them being looted and raped.

By the time everyone got bored and realise da fisticuffs tournament was stupid half of Germany's towns were on fire, half the men dead and half the women carrying a foreigners child.

It was several wars wrapped in one:
- religious war between Catholics and Protestants, like what had happened in some form in most of Europe
- Fronde type event of nobility and bourgeoisie together against royal/imperial power (like the Fronde in France or the Civil War in England)
- old struggle between the Habsburgs trying to unite Germany under their rule and France trying to prevent that

It ended with the treaty of Westphalia, the first time the borders and balance of power of Europe were redefined into a solid shape, with the fall of Habsburg and Spanish power, the guarantee of independence for German states, and France coming out of the war like America out of WW2 as the new hegemonic power in Europe. The Europe of Westphalia lasted until Napoleon.
