How can this have been useful in any possible way.

Here is a good discussion on this point OP

That specific helm is an SCA baton combat helm, but that said, grotesques of both ornate and practical forms have existed throughout history.
Obviously, the more ornate ones were purely for parade or tournament, but there are some that made it to battle.

Pffft. Edgenobles maybe.
A real edgelord goes into battle wearing a suite entirely engraved with various middle fingers, figged thumbs and other rude hand symbols.

well I mean Henry VIII had this so I guess it's plausible

Not really, you'd just be that creepy guy in the platoon that nobody got along with.
>>831468
I love that helmet. I can just imagine that guy being some hulk of a man towering over most of the other soldiers, wielding some large mace and turning his gaze towards you. That face is so grim, it must've scared people shitless if it was ever used in combat
Here is artistic yet still practical

Thats Spanish. Note the arms of Spain, and file name saying Charles V, 1540. Pic related, though of him younger. He later learned to grow a goatee and hide the beast.

I call that a 21st century piece of garbage.
Metalwork (and also knowledgement of the human body) were not that developed.

Why does armour have to be solely useful? Just looking cool is a significant element in the design and ownership of armour.

Maximilian was a turbo edgelord and this armor served no purpose in his times.
>>837690
Maximilian armour is most of all characterised by the fluting, not by the symbols. This armour did not belong to Emperor Maximilian who was neither an edgelord nor someone who would have worn armour with rude symbols on them. In fact, none of his remaining armour pieces have anything of that sort.
Also, of course this armour served a purpose during his time. In the early 16th century, full plate armour was still commonly worn on the battlefields and in tournaments.

It was more likely used by a lesser noble, whose reign was over manlets, while sperging out in a parade or public appearance

I agree that the helmet is probably fake, but I'm pretty sure people knew what a fucking skull looked like.

>but I'm pretty sure people knew what a fucking skull looked like.
Depending on the time, you might be surprised. Gross anatomy was for the most part a mystery to people for a long time due to the religious powers that be tended to not allow most people to open up cadavers. Grave robbing for bodies was a pretty common thing for universities and hobby-scientists to do. For example, Michelangelo and Da Vinci were groundbreaking in their knowledge of anatomy as far as artists go because they got a pass to do so.
>>843229
And here's something Michelangelo did, although I'm sure by now most people have seen this connection.
>>834709
>and also knowledge of the human body
are you implying they didn't know about skulls?
>>843240
for insides like hearts, lungs and brains. sure. but since the dawn of time everyone knows what a skeleton looked like. it's the one part of the human body that doesn't decay within a few weeks.
as for the helmet. fake reddit garbage. way too advanced and way too edgy for any civilization that still needs to use helmets
>>844877
>way too advanced
I agree that it's a modern creation, but there's nothing particularly advanced about it. The hippika gymnasia masks would have been just as difficult to create.
