WWI is considered not just the actual beginning of it but of a new era as well. Political situation after WWI is less relevant to us than the situation after WWII (although that lost its effect after 1989) but the changes in society were more profound.

The death were more senseless since it was mostly attrition and tons of men died for no gain, but the reasons for the war werent any more senseless than for WW2
Germany and Austria fought for imperialistic reasons, just like Japan in WW2
Russia and Britain fought to help an ally, just like Britain in WW2
France fought because it was under attack, just like America and the USSR in WW2
WW2 was basically WW1 part 2. But they just had better weapons and more varied scenery in part 2. But WW2 was much tougher on civilians.

As far as "senseless" is concerned, I suppose WW1 gets credit for starting as a disorganized mess of secret alliances, but WW1 was an inevitable powder keg waiting to happen, while WW2 was entirely avoidable and seen from miles away, yet we drove straight into that clearly marked divider anyways.

They got charged with some ambiguous war crimes, that is all. The six million gassed came much later. They literally got charged for a bunch of bullshit like Jew lampshades and Jew soap, things that are objectively false.
