The Jews wanted protection from their enemies, so the Romans came in and gave them it.
Once the dangers was removed they, being Jews, began to revolt against the Roman rule despite them getting the Romans to come there in the first place.
Seeing this the Romans realized the Jews didn't know their place in all of things, hoping some harmless idols would help.
Jews had a problem praising the emperors in their temples. It caused tension periodically. Eventually they let the Jews show loyalty in other ways. But it took some seriously bloody revolts to get there.

Well for the size of the revolts the best example would be The Great Revolt (Also called the First Roman-Jewish War). This caused the great diaspora. The Fiscus Judaicus was a tax that, when paid, allowed the Jews to practice their religion however they wanted. It went through periods of being enforced and not. Until it was phased out some time in the second century.

Interesting parallel, the Muslims are now chimping out for what they claim to be desecration of their religious grounds on the Temple Mount, but really I fail to see how exactly the Jews have gone and "desecrated" it to the point of stabbing children.
