Usually they're pretty good at war, it's just that when the Germans invaded in WW2, the French were smart and decided not to needlessly waste lives too much.

For most of their history they have shit on faces at war. Sadly the only battles that are remembered in history tend to be the last ones, which France has been humiliated at more than a few. In WW2, the French army was defeated in the field, so they gave up, just like virtually every other nation in history. It's a bit unfair to call them cowards as a result of this. (I'm mentioning this because this is much of the source of the French are surrendering cheese monkeys meme)
