Mao was a rather intelligent man. He was extremely emotionally manipulative and managed to work his way from a small beauracrat in the communist party to party chairman.
One old adage is that if you can't control the countryside you can't control China. Mao was a master of guerilla warfare and in rousing up morale and support for his cause. Refusing to go down was his absolute speciality and you can see this in how he eventually captured the entire country from the ROC which was better equipped, funded, and supported.
You can also see Mao Zedong's genius demonstrated again during the Cultural Revolution. After the disaster of the Great Leap forward he was cast aside and faced massive opposition within the party. However, rather than quietly slipping away into obscurity, he managed to generate a massive country-wide upheaval that made many in China feverishly devoted to him while also eliminating his intellectual enemies and rivals, fully bringing China under his iron grip once again.
It didn't matter that he was a hick rice farmer. He was brilliant in igniting passion and in finding solutions when his back was against the wall. Where Mao faltered was when he was expected to actually lead a county. He was an incredible revolutionary, but a piss poor despot.

America ended WW2 with the strongest economy in the world, having taken a fraction of the casualties (by percentage) of any other nation.
The truth is that there were a hell of a lot of communist sympathisers in the American government at that time. They pushed Roosevelt and Truman to take a soft stance with the Soviets, and they forestalled any suggestions of helping the nationalists in China. You can shit on McCarthy for his lack of showmanship all you want, but when the USSR's records were opened up in the early 90s, well wouldn't you fucking know it - he was right all along. Not on every specific detail, but the whole reds-under-the-bed thing turns out to have been less paranoia, and more fully justified fear of Soviet infiltration.
