The societal system in Spain's colonies was far more advanced than that and established the way for admixture between Spaniards and natives, something that was frowned upon by other colonial powers. Also, their treatment of indegenous populations were miles ahead from other colonial powers (namely UK and Portugal) in the Americas.

The Spanish imported a fuck-ton of less than desirables, brutal get-rich-quick types and poorfags to south and central america. The mass death of natives was largely a side effect of hardier diseases being introduced, but a larger number survived and mixed with the immigrating invaders than in north america.
That being said, all empires are cruel (that doesn't excuse it) but comparatively Spain was mid-tier at worst.

Before 1492 Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the world and the regions inhabited by the Maya were some of the most densely populated in history. The cities in the Andes also had very high populations. By contrast there was not a single city in what would become the United States numbering over 15,000 people when the English arrived at Jamestown in 1607. The indigenous population of the United States could not recover as quickly from introduced diseases the way the more urban indigenous populations in Mexico, Central, and South America could because they were so spread out and because there were less of them to begin with.The Spaniards toppled massive sophisticated governments and enslaved every Indian they could get their hands on and forced the rest into a caste system where they could never be equal to whites.
Also nothing in US history, not even plantation slavery, can compare to the atrocities committed in the silver mines of Spanish America.

Look at what the average citizen of a country settled by the spanish looks like now compared to the average north american.
The Spanish were rough but their colonization integrated the natives. Rather than one group overpowering the other and becoming dominant a third was firmed. Even if in the British settled areas they had nice intentions the US became massive and British-cultured while the natives now live on shitty little reservations.

This reminds me of an interesting story my dad told me. When the Spanish went to look for El Dorado they discovered it was actually a lake and not a city. The indigenous people would throw gold and other valuables into the lake as tribute. The Spanish then forced the indigenous people to retrieve the gold where many of them drowned in the process.
Coming from the same people who put their own "to the test" I could only imagine what they thought what thought of the godless heathens in the new world.
