I think current trends in academia that are moving us towards a more inclusive narrative are fucking great, especially non-whig histories that incorporate black folk as actual agents rather than as either simple victims or unreformable savages.
I'm not an expert on Africa but I think reorienting the way we view Africa as a complicated, diverse place rather than a monolithic block of subjugated peoples has contributed a tremendous amount to our general understanding of decolonization and postcolonial political happenings.

Everyone automatically assumes that just because Africa was under developed during the modern era, it had always been that way but this isn't true. We have cited numerous advanced African civilizations in this thread, Axum, Egypt, Carthage, Moors, Benin, et al.
Europe was a fucking backwater from between the Fall of Rome to the Age of Exploration. At the time of exploration, Africa was technologically on equal terms with Europe in many ways. They had better steel production for example. They just weren't in a good geographic or political situation to colonize like Europe was. Europe didn't attempt to colonize Africa like it did America at the time because militarily they couldn't project power and face up to African states. I would argue that the slave trade (of which African states and merchants took an active part in) depopulated Africa and destabilized the continent to the point which spurred on underdevelopment.
