The workers were whisked away and their families had to track them down later in russia. When they got there the workers were basically falling apart and turning into goo, and people around them were getting sick.
No average person knew a single thing about radiation at the time so it was like this insane evil magic force. They just did things like change people cloths and burn them after a single use and started isolating the patients. They supposedly cleared out the floor above and below in this hospital as the workers were dying and doctors and nurses just went awol and NOPE'd out when people around the patients started getting sick as well.
