if you're inferring to the soviets during the 80's, it's because the russians like the dumb fucks they are thought scored earth tactics and making the entire afghani population hate the shit out of their guts was a sound idea.
That and also stingers, lots and lots of stingers all given to them conviniently by not the usa
>>76280
Because it was irregular warfare in which the political objectives were almost impossible, to win the hearts and minds of people of a people you've invaded whom you're actively killing.
>>76708
Who are you quoting?
>>76280
Mountains and retarded highlander culture. Look that today's afghanistan held by western powers is mostly the non-pashto part (non-afghan part you could say)
>>76280
By hiding out in a place called the graveyard of empires
Afghanistan wins simply because they can't lose. There is no infrastructure to attack, no strategic choke points to hold, no natural resources that can be exploited fast enough to pay for the army you have there, no central government to replace. Even the concept of going to war with Afghanistan is stupid because there really is no Afghanistan as far as Afghans are concerned. You are going up against a non existent entity.
>fucking with mountain people
You'll always lose.
Glorious AKs.

Yes, the Taliban has infrastructures. The Taliban have strategic places they hold, the Taliban has resources (Human, weapons, etc) the Taliban has a chain of command and leadership, etc.
You take one village, than lose it in a couple of months later. If the US was devoted to win against the Taliban, it could.

Ok so you flush out the Taliban and then what? How do you establish a centralized government outside Kabul city limits? How to yo build infrastructure that can even support anything resembling a functioning country? How do you replace local laws and customs with just one that comes from the Kabul government? And the final question is how the fuck do you pay for all of this? Right now the Afghan Airforce has an operating budget that is higher than the GDP of Afghanistan itself and wouldn't exist if it weren't for U.S. aid. Keep in mind in a country that doesn't have a central government outside of Kabul and its surrounding areas you need a helicopter fleet to move people around.

>they are thought scored earth tactics
That is more of the problem of trying to 'fight' an insurgency.
Making a tribal islamic peasant people turn into industrial socialists in 9 years doesn't work. And three motor rifle and one air assault divisions wont do it in 100 years.
>That and also stingers
The Soviets had the loss rate back down to pre stinger levels in a couple of months, even then they lost one twentieth the airframes the US lost in Vietnam.
All the Stinger did ws put the US' most advanced MANPAD into the hands of the Soviets, Chinese and Iranians.
