Why was france so populous throughout so much of history yet now Germany has almost 14 million more people?
>>
>>757570
Because a certain someone united the german people.
>>
>>757570
Because France underwent a period of high political instability starting with the french revolution. They didn't have a population explosion during the 19th century like the rest of Europe.

Here is an autistic map I made in another thread.

I believe oceanic climate and flat land was the best environment for grain production in the medieval era. New technology opened up more land to cultivation later on.

Why are Austria-Hungary bundled together as far back as 1000?
>>

Better lands for agriculture mostly, southern Germany is quite hilly and mountaines while northern Germany is a giant flat land with grass, meadows and marshes.

This desu. Since the year 1800, France has about doubled in population. Compare that to the UK, where there were about 10.5 million people living in Great Britain in 1800 and about 5.5 million in Ireland, which means the UK grew by over 4 times since then. Spain had about 10 million people, and also grew by over 4 times.

Then there is the United States, which had approximately 3 million people in 1776, growing more than 100 fold.

French political instability from the late 18th to late 19th century was not limited to the French Revolution. There were two other revolutions and then the invasion by Prussia who occupied part of France for several years.
>>
>>757854
If you weigh that population against it's achievements...
>>
>>757766
Because they didn't want to include Austria in Germany maybe? Or some of the data is from early 1900's sources.

That happens when you import half of Syria and quarter of Turkey.

Because there is such a thing as "undeveloped land". Germany started off as a bunch of disconnected small villages and had something like 1% of the population of the Roman Empire at its height spread out across its considerable geography. But they started chopping down trees, making roads, participating in Hanseatic trade, and eventually their population surpassed France, which had largely been prime, developed farmland before even the Romans moved in.

This isn't really a good appreciation of why France has a lesser population. The population of France was remarkably higher than Germany by 1792, and German land had definitely been cultivated by this point.

There was a demographic crisis in France in 1815 because so many men had been killed, so there were actually more women in the country than men which is absolutely awful for any nation state. After 1815, it was simply more profitable for the French rural populace to stop having so many kids.
>>
>>757886
well two and a half years is still technically "years" innit

>occupying rightful german clay until 1871
>>
>>757879
Political instability isn't a good explanation for a lack of growth either. For one, every revolution in France after the first was limited to Paris(and Lyon if you're going to be pedantic) and were severely limited in their impact on population. It certainly wasn't country wide chaos and it wouldn't have stopped the mainly rural population from breeding.

Aren't we forgetting the fact that France didn't industrialize fast and that the potato became more popular in modern Europe?
>>
>>757859
Then it would still be something to sneeze at. European civ only managed hegemony for about 500 years, and white people have overextended themselves at this point; Americans can't even colonize the Middle East, while brown people are gradually overtaking Europe. But brown people will out-sustain them and be the ones to colonize the stars.

>European civ only managed hegemony for about 500 years
Good for us that it was the 500 years that mattered the most in history.

Are you baka? See it this way: China gave the world reliable paper, the compass, and gunpowder, yet other cultures better capitalized on them. The same will probably go for European inventions, as Western culture is undergoing gradual decline.

The next 500 years will be by far more important. Nano isn't even a common commodity like electricity yet.

The return to normalization is happening.

In 100 years, it will be "WE WUZ RICH N SHIT"
>>
>>758074
Basically brown people have a significant natural advantage, because half of their civil effort isn't wasted on not freezing to death at night or shoveling snow.
>>
>>758000
More like 800 desu.
>>
>>758058
Who says Middle Eastern folks have the cultural standards ready to capitalize on Western Inventions? As far as I can tell it isn't going to well for them.
>>
>>758120
Nah, China and India were dominant before then, too bad they didn't do much with it.
>>
>>758124
Gee iunno, maybe because over a dozen have nuclear power or weapons? And they have to, because of the threat of Israel.
>>
>>758151
>They are dominant
>They didn't do anything

Isn't that a logical contradiction? Anyways I meant in terms of economy Europe as been doing quite well compared to China or India for longer than 500 years.

>>758160
I don't mean something like nukes but something like utilizing technology by working hard. Even Southern Europeans can't seem to manage to make a modern economy work flawlessly, I am not sure if all of the Middle East is as competitieve as say Britain or Germany.
