We didn't. We like them because, you know, they are our only traditional ally who didn't throw bombs on us but that's about it. They also support us on Kosovo issue and are the third largest investor if I remember correctly. So, it is in our interest to have good relations. For some reason people seem to think that, because we keep good diplomatic relations with them and don't blindly hate them like other east Euros, we are somehow Russian cocksuckers.
There are some ultra nationalist groups who want government to end talks with EU and join RF or Euroasian Union, but they didn't manage to get a single party into the parliament on the last election, and I doubt they'll do any better in the next one.
As for why Russia didn't intervene, well, Yeltsin persuaded Milošević to back down in 1999 telling him Russia will have troops in Kosovo. Supposedly NATO told him this, but when Milošević decided to stop with military action, NATO, ehm, persuaded Yeltsin to back off.

Originally that country was supposed to be Yugoslavia, but when Croatia and Bosnia decided to split off without giving a shit about opposition of Serbs living in those countries, "Greater Serbia" was the only way to get what we wanted. The thing is, it's clearly been established that nationalism isn't really a productive way of identifying. In the grand scheme of things you assume too much of what your fellow nationals want or need. And you fall too easily into an us/them dichotomy that involves whole nations.

The problem is that populations historically didn't locate themself in a way that would allow you to get them whole in continuously bordered area without enclaves, therefore you either get areas which are populated by the majority of your compatriots, alternatively you're doing Stalin-style population movements.

I didn't tell Serbs in Croatia and Bosnia to attempt to secede from those republics. They decided that on their own after their opinion on the matter of Croatia and Bosnia seceding from Yugoslavia were ignored. Bosniaks were even flat out told there will be war if they forced a secession.
And you talk like we were the only nationalistic ones in the war. Croats literally did the same thing as us in Bosnia with Herzegovina, except they were less successful and couldn't get autonomy like we did with Srpska (though it seems they are demanding it now).
