Not really sure besides internal factors. I believe after Gorbachev enacted wide spread reforms to the USSR, Honecker thought that was incorrect and just stayed his course with old DDR policy. The people however didn't like that and by 1988-1990 the country started to fall apart.
Not really sure how people really think about the DDR, I've never met anyone who lived it. Not sure if they would say it was a good experience.
