Why did the Stalin allied with Hitler in 1939? And how was the relation of Stalin with the western democracies in those times?

Before that, Stalin tried to get on the good side of western powers, but came across as a twisted fucking psychopath so they didnt like him

then he allied with Hitler because they both wanted Poland, but Stalin deep down didnt trust Hitler.

The war might have been very different if it werent for fucking norway and sweden. While Stalin still was on team Hitler, he invaded Finland, and England and France were actually planning on sending help, but Norway and Sweden used their neutrality to deny them path, so Finland was on its own.

Hitler invaded Denmark and then Norway when he heard of this plan to make sure they wouldnt get a good position above them. Then Hitler turned on Stalin because reasons, forcing him into the arms of the allies

sorry about tangent

Stalin was well aware that Hitler wanted to destroy the USSR (public knowledge, since he said as much in Mein Kampf) and extend his make-believe empire all the way to the borders of Imperial Japan (unofficially aligned with Germany and also wanting to cut into the USSR), so he attempted to rally Europe and America around opposition to Germany. European "leaders", especially Churchill, didn't like Hitler but they in fact knew that Hitler was going to invade the USSR and that's what they wanted him to do, while the USA was in full isolationist ideology mode after the shitfest of WWI. Completely isolated and knowing that the USSR was not ready to face war, certainly not on two fronts, Stalin took the only means of action available and agreed to a //non-aggression treaty//, which is not an //alliance//, with the Nazis and a peace treaty with Japan in 1941.

Allied to split Poland, separated for winner to take over Western Europe.

He didn't "ally", it was a non-aggression pact.

Why did Stalin do it? Because the west were being faggots and didn't support the USSR and wanted Germany to invade it as the west supported Hitler. In the late 1930s several attempts by the USSR to ally with Britain and France to "intervene" in Germany were put forward by Britain and France went "lol no".

Stalin needed time to build Soviet forces, he hoped the non-aggression pact would slow down Hitlers assault and that with it he could create enough of a barrier between the USSR heartland and Germany (which is why Russia cares so much about Ukraine and Poland too this very day).

"Give a German a weapon and it will be pointed at Russia" is a very old saying

UGH ACHTULLY

the goal was to get to the "A-A line" which is between Archangel and Astrakhan. Thats why Stalingrad was so important, it was the last real stop before the Germans reached Astrakhan, meaning they would have pretty much won

Stalin never invaded Finland. In the end he received only like 16% of the finnish soil as concessions. The soviets got their asses kicked good by Finland. Any sort of "victory" was gained by a war of attrition and mere overpowering odds Finland faced; the actual victory was largely pyrrhic for Stalin.
