I've been there. I'm Orthodox but I was tempted to convert to Islam because it was so awe inspiring. Sort of makes you question the fact that Allah might not be real compared to Yahweh.
It's depressing, I hope that the Turks will convert but that doesn't seem realistic. It would be nice to see the Hagia Sophia as a cathedral again.

I'm sorry you feel that way. But mosques in Istanbul are astounding. The glimmers of gold, the arabic script chiseled into millions of miniature pieces, the scent of honey candles all of it just impressed me.
Sure Cathedrals of Western europe have awesome stuff as well. But as an Orthodox I was never awed the same way in local Ukrainian churches, nor in any Russian places of worship I tourist traveled to.
We have very ornate props and ceremonial garb for Orthodoxy, but Turkish muslim buildings are insanely beautiful. Especially the Blue Mosque. The sheer number of turqoise pieces and the worksmanship that went to it 500 years ago, and preserve precisely in the same manner without a scratch is mindblowing.
I gasped when I stepped into the Blue Mosque. That much I distinctly remember. Achingly beautiful.
If the current Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan keeps pushing his luck, Istanbul may very well return to Orthodox hands. Russian Orthodox, to be precise.
