Think of it in terms of 19th century man, America had been in nonstop expansion until they reached California and signed a treaty for the northern border with Canada (68th parallel?) (*aside from purchase of irrelevant Alaska). This meant war and conquering and expansion, but at the late 1800s the best they had was a civil war and a few years of recovering from it, the expansion seemed to (and had largely) stop. It was an end. Compare with the Turner Thesis of the American frontier.
