Which country has the nicest historical sites/buildings?
India.
Italy and Greece
>can't decide
India, but if you take size into account then Italy.
>>67675
I'm currently learning about architecture in those countries via Classics, so beautiful.
>>67604
I like Edwardian architecture, so England.

Italy easily beats Greece for me.
Greece only has notable monuments and such from Antiquity. Italy has them for Antiquity, The Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the Modern Era.

Memes, yes.
You cannot deny the architectural beauty of India, though.
>>67932
I live in the English country side. it is kind of amazing being able to go for walks and seeing things like castles and ancient walls. I always took churches for granted but architecturally, they're quite amazing.
Turkey probably
>>67604
Historical buildings is hard, as most formerly powerful nations have a shit-ton of them.
When it comes to monuments of historical context, its Italy, Germany and the US

>>68008
Too bad that most Italian buildings belong to Greek architecture.
>>68214
some pretty phallic lookin towers there
>>68217
pretty sure most are renaissance and later, but yeah the Greeks built some nice stuff there.
>>68217
The thread isn't about which culture created the most notable monuments, it's about which country has the most of them inside of it.
>>68214
Morrowind definitely looks like it was inspired by India's architecture style. It's one of the few places on Earth that looks so fucking alien and exotic to European style buildings while having a feeling of great mysticism and elegance in its own right
>>68217
Why's that bad? Everything was inspired by something. Or most things were anyway. I'm not sure which country did it first but there are beautiful castles all over Europe. It's like saying all those castles are shit because they're inspired by a source piece of architecture.
>>68306
I'm not saying they're shit, it's just that the architecture of any building pre-Renaissance is Greek.
Turkey, obv
>>68553
this triggers the greek
>>67604
Iran and turkey i guess
Turkey should win by miles.
You have Bronze age Anatolian artefacts, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. There are more intact ancient Greek sites in Turkey than there are in Greece.
Not to mention Istanbul being one of the most amazing and historic cities on Earth.
>>67604
The US has a lot of everything, much of it very well preserved. Its not original but it takes from many styles, especially Greco-Roman early on.
>>68553
>hey guys lets slap some minarets on it and call it ours
>>67604
Is this a named building? If so, what is it? It is beautiful.
>>68651
The question wasn't "which culture built the best buildings", it was "which country (currently) has them?".

Really? Nobody mentions France?
Between ancient Roman viaducts, earliest Merovingian buildings, Romanesque abbeys, beautiful Gothic cathedrals, and all the Baroque and Classical and Neoclassical stuff, Kenneth Clark spent half his time there while shooting Civilisation.

Italy, then France, then Czech Republic with Prague (even though they were bombed), then Spain, then Russia, India, China and Latin American countries (Mexico, Argentina, Chile, etc.).
Any country with brutalist architecture. That shit gets my cock diamond hard. Dystopian sci-fi like, powerful, pseudo modern. Unfortunately, many of these beauties are being teared down these days.
Italy. It's not even a competition. Just go see Rome, Florence, Venice etc (No, I am not a greaseball)

Must post the British version. (pic related)
> In 1067, the monastery of Mont Saint-Michel gave its support to Duke William of Normandy in his claim to the throne of England. This he rewarded with properties and grounds on the English side of the Channel, including a small island off the south-western coast of Cornwall which was modelled after the Mount and became a Norman priory named St Michael's Mount of Penzance.

I'm going to pull for my own:
Spain and Portugal
Best example of Pre-Romanesque architecture, Islamic Architecture, Mozarabic Architecture, Renaissance, all the different kinds of baroque...You name it.
When it comes to western architecture, nothing beats the Iberian Peninsula.
>>70770
Technically I was correct by deducing when the Cathedral was first built.

>>67604
France, and the housing castles on the Loire river
I would also like to add Versailles and Vaux-le- Vicomte between many others. AND i take Belgium into France, so I'll add Bruges, Antwerp, Waterloo and Brussels
>>70915
You just googled it and saw the date when the original church must have been built, because the church in that picture is very very obviously Baroque and could not possibly have been built at any time near the 11th century.
>>68720
considering what a shit state the greeks left it in when they last had it i'd say the turks do

Is there actually that much left in Greece? I got the impression that there's not much that isn't totally wrecked and/or in a foreign museum somewhere.

The Hagia Sophia with its layers of history is pretty incredible. For me it lived up to the hype, which is amazing considering the hype.

It's odd, because they had brick laying techniques too. Perhaps they just found it easier to carve impressive monuments rather than building them from the ground up.
>>71619
>Is there actually that much left in Greece?
Yes there's ancient stuff everywhere

Chinese buddhist stuff is amazing, the Guanyin statue in Sanya is so damn beautiful. Large and pearly, watching over the ocean...
Park Guell in Spain never ceases to amaze.
>>68179
So aside from finances, is there any reason buildings like this are never attempted anymore? Modern architecture doesn't seem to take any leaps, with some exception. But I'd really like to see glass and steel or stone renditions of temples and buildings in more than just ruins.
>>75755
No ambition among the ultra rich.
No slave labor inflates the prices greatly, and stock companies means there is less of personal rich people.
There isn't any other real reason.
It also helps most extreme buildings was partially public works, which means they got built slowly via taxes.
>>67604
Italy, without question.

>It's one of the few places on Earth that looks so fucking alien and exotic to European style buildings while having a feeling of great mysticism and elegance in its own right
Nailed it, I fucking love Indian architecture inspite of having made dozens of POO IN DA LOO posts on 4chan.

All that Gaudi stuff get's boring fast if you're from there or visit the city constantly, t.b.h.
There's more beautiful, yet less colorful, stuff in Barcelona. The streets in general are cute.

Holy shit, that looks amazing

>No slave labor inflates the prices greatly
Well that makes sense. I mean, it just feels like humans are just lazying around right now. I enjoy looking at Dubai because, despite slums being just in the back ground, the buildings are so innovative and marvels. Sure I'd never ever be rich enough to so much as get to the entrance, but the fact that Burj Khalifa even exists makes me happy. I want to see humanity leave an impression the way the ancients did. Granted glass and steel wont last as long as the pyramids, but it's stil a step.
