Yea, there was an engineered famine that killed millions upon millions of Christian Slavs in Ukraine and Southern Russia. The chief architects and implementers of the famine were Bolshevik Jews Lazar Moiseivich Kaganovitch and Laverenti Beria.
The whole USSR was struck with a famine resulting from mismanagement. Ukraine happened to be hit the hardest.

Hungary, and many other countries suffered a famine at the same time Ukraine did. It seems to have been caused by weather conditions, similar to the Dust Bowl phenomenon in the US. However, it also seems like the USSR could have managed it way better, but instead focused on keeping Moscow and so well fed, instead of helping Ukraine.

This technically isn't true. Tankies were those who supported Khrushchev's actions and the Soviet state until its fall. Its modern usage is a broadening of the term to include earlier Soviet crimes, which is why I mentioned Kronstadt.
Let's take Hobsbawm, for example, who was notoriously lenient on the Soviets in the 30s.
He spoke out against Hungary and Czechoslovakia, (although he retained his party membership). Whereas he would not really be considered a tankie pre-USSR fall, I think it's fair to call him a bit of a tankie now.
