Most of a Master's degree program in a liberal arts field is buddy system bullshit.

Academics, and I say this as nonpolitically as I can, are some of the most conniving, backstabbing people out there.

As far as why he's a teacher, I'm assuming you go to an American public school, so you're lucky he isn't a community college drop out with a degree in "general education" and a teaching certification.

I was very good in history class and got very good marks so people used to believe what I said about things. So in classes I would deliberately say things that were incorrect to the person sat next to me (loud enough for classmates to hear) so that other people would put their hands up, answer the question and get it wrong. Then I could give the right answer and look better than them.

Wasn't this true, though? I've heard that Caligula did that to demean the Senators, saying even his horse was more capable.
>>
>>68537
Majority of the sources I've read it was always quoted as "It has been said that..." which already makes it shady as fuck. Also Seutonius wrote about Caligula about 50 years after Caligula's death, so that makes it basically even less believable. Hell, even Seutonius himself wrote "It is also said".

Sorta, but if I recall right this stuff was written by the Senators themselves and they likely made up that since they hated his guts, unreliability, I guess.

In fairness it's sort of up in the air.

If you start from the Japanese invasion of China, then it began in 1937. But most people don't because that was a local conflict that just got folded into the larger war.

Germany invaded Poland in 1939. However the War was strictly limited to Europe at that point, and Eastern Europe at that, unless you count the Battle of the Atlantic. Which you probably should.

The Soviets had their Winter War in 1939-40 and some skirmishes with the Japanese in 1939, but not really a "war".

The Italians didn't declare war until 1940, after the Germans invaded France, which is when the war actually took on a "world" aspect as it kicked things off in Africa.

Japan attacking America in 1941 made the war truly a "world" war since that's when the Pacific theater opened up with Japanese attacks on America, British, Dutch, and other targets.

1939-1945 is generally your safest bet (and it's personally what I use), but if you're not including the Sino-Japanese War's start in 1937 then a case can be made that you shouldn't include the general German-Allied stuff either since it's all "local" prior to Italy getting involved in 1940.

I can't remember my history teachers being deliberately wrong, but the best of them had such great quirks.

First was my teacher while I was 13-16, and he did his job fairy well. But every now and then he'd slip up.
>He loved beer history.
>Beer history.
>Working with 13-16 year old kids.
I had a great chat about it on the bus with him once, outside of the kiddie classroom, and there was such passion in that barrel of a man.

My current one looks like an actual bitter teddy bear. He starts every single lesson with complaining about something at the school. His quirks are not as out of place as beer history among fresh teens, but fairly entertaining.
>Jazz-music
>His own ancestry
>Trains

He tells us many times about various voyages to visit historically relevant trains. Like, private cars of Hitler and so on.

But I'd guess there's that one teacher... We only had her for a year, in social studies, but she openly praised the communistic stuff in eastern Berlin post war.
>Everyone had jobs and enough to eat.
>Many were very sad when the wall was torn down.

Nope, that was a photo taken pre-launch

They made 2 prototypes. One of them was tested by launching out of the atmosphere and landing it, and the other one was never finished. The one that was actually launched got sadly crushed into rubble by a warehouse fire in 2002 (before you whine about dates the actual craft was made in '84)

Interestingly enough it was launched completely unmanned and remains the only shuttle to ever complete a launch and landing automatically, as well as the only spacecraft to ever have been designed exclusively as a platform for nuclear weapons, with no scientific applications even considered.

They might have. The two were certainly aware of each other's existence (the Chinese referred to the Roman Empire as "Da Qin" or "Great Qin"), and we know for a fact that Roman traders got as far as Malaysia, and Han traders as far as Mesopotamia.

There were probably never any Romans in Han China itself (the Chinese records say that there was one envoy but it's unclear if the Chinese were talking about an actual envoy from Rome or just someone from that general area) but it's quite probable that their merchants actually interacted directly at at least a few points.

>The treaty of Versailles was used to punish Germany because France and England were mad

This is reductive, but it's not outright wrong.

The treaty was designed to be punitive and heap indemnity onto the new German republic in a way that would ostensibly make it impossible for them to ever wage another war. These provisions were influenced by the cries of the war-weary citizens who sought to press whatever advantages over the vanquished as they could find support for (which happened to be a lot).

Traders. Folk trading stuff. Roman gold coins have been found in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam (near modern Hanoi), which wouldn't be there unless there were Romans there buying stuff directly (since if it was Indian or Persian or whatever intermediaries they'd be using their own coins).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Roman_relations#Trade_relations

I'm not saying it was a flourishing and vibrant trade with thousands of people every year making the trip; just that on occasion some folk from the Roman Empire met some folk from the Chinese Empire. There was probably at least one debate between them about who's empire would kick who's ass.

>WWII is only the holocaust, the actual course of the war never is properly looked at until we ask for it
>Kurt Waldheim was an evil man for knowing about the war crimes the Germans conducted

He also gave us handouts from a veeeery left-leaning newspaper to the point some people in the class including me flat out refused to read these and his attempts to influence us before elections (history and political education are one subject in Austria) was so blatant he received multiple complaints about it.

Despite all this I liked him. When he didn't mix education and spreading his ideology up he was entertaining, informative and intelligent. It is a good thing we had a lot of politically interested people in our class (mostly boys) who called him out on bullshitting. If he didn't stop, we became /pol/ tier politically incorrect.

He also was our German teacher, where we called him out on any typo he made, asking things like "And you teach German?"

Coins traveled a lot in a general near area, but. they didn't tend to cross thousands of miles of ocean unless someone was bringing them en masse from where they were minted to where they were going. We also know of a maritime trade route to Chinese-controlled Jiaozhi and the Khmer kingdom of Funan, connected to Nabatean and Egyptian ports in the Red Sea, by the 2nd century, if not earlier.

>Roman gold coins have been found in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam (near modern Hanoi), which wouldn't be there unless there were Romans there buying stuff directly

No, it was a case of Roman trader paying say, an Arab trader with Roman coins, who then pays an Indian trader with the same coins, who then pays a Vietnamese trader with those same coins.

Now it's not impossible that a Roman trader could have made it all the way to Vietnam but that's just not how trade worked back in Oldy Timey days, it was; trade item > trader > another trader > to another trader > etc.

Except that the Chinese have records of Roman traders, merchants, explorers, and adventurers, as well as their own likewise. Gan Ying reached Mesopotamia. Maës Titianus reached either Tashkurgan or Kashgar, both of which were under Han Chinese control at the time (and continue to be so today). The Chinese record that either Emperor Antoninus Pius or his successor, Marcus Aurelius, sent an embassy to China that reached it in 166 (Pius died in 161 and Aurelius reigned under the name Antoninus so there's a bit of confusion as to which). The Romans came up from the South, which means a probable sea journey. The Chinese recount further missions being sent to Cao Rui in the Kingdom of Wei (probably during the reign of Severus Alexander), and another in the year 284 by the Emperor Carus.

My ultimate point being, returning to the start of this:

I'm not suggesting the Romans and Chinese didn't have contact, just addressing some anon's statement that;

"Roman coins wouldn't be there unless there were Romans there buying stuff directly."

It's FAR more likely that the coins made their way to the Mekong Delta thru the hands of one trader to another, as that's how most traders operated, considering it took months and months to go from Point A to Point B and odds are slim to none that a Roman trader would even be able to converse with a Vietnamese trader in the first place.

The Italians managed it a thousand years later: we know for a fact that there were Venetian and Portuguese trading colonies in China in the 1300s. Sure, the extra thousand years of naval development had shrunk the distances somewhat, but it was still a journey of several years to get from Venice to China.

Besides, you can actually pick up the basics of a language, at least for basic trading purposes, in as little as just a few months if you're surrounded by speakers of it.

They might have also used a mutual lingua franca, like Sanskrit.

> Sure, the extra thousand years of naval development had shrunk the distances somewhat

"Somewhat"? Naval tech had advanced by leaps and bounds from the Roman Era to the Late Middle Ages, driven by the need for Europeans to by-pass the Muslims in the MidEast, who were jacking up prices on spices, silk and other Eastern goods, as the overland trade routes across Asia had been fucked by the Mongols.

Did Romans and Chinese on occasion make it all the way from Rome to Beijing or visa versa? Yes.

Was _regular trade_ happening directly from Rome to Beijing and visa versa? No.

The Church's issue wasn't really with the actual traders, as they did put in effort and take risks to get their profit.

The problem was with the usury (via Jews at the time) that came with ever expanding trade, which is absolutely a case of profiting while doing nothing to earn that profit.

And the Church was proven right when the Protestant Reformation came about, as this had little to do with religious issues (at least among the elite) and was in fact mostly about Christians cooking-up reasons for taking over the usury business from the Jews.

I had a 30 minute argument with my history teacher about the Holy Roman Empire.
More or less, it stemmed from her saying "This took place in this city (munster?), but I don't remember the country." And I just said "Probably in the Holy Roman Empire, somewhere."
She went all autistic, taking about how it's medieval history and Rome fell in 500~ A.D. (I don't remember if she got the date right or just said "in the 500's), I started talking about Charlemagne to try to establish what I was talking about, but she either didn't seem to know about him or didn't seem to care. She got autistically stuck thinking Roman meant the empire, 3 people from A.P. who where in there for a study hall sided with her (I wasn't in A.P. because I hated the teacher), saying the Holy Roman Empire refereed to Constantine's Rome.

> Well the protestant reform was motivated by the Church being corrupt as fuck though

Which the European nobility had no real issues with, as it was their 2nd and 3rd sons who made up the hierarchy of the Church.

The fundamental problem at the time was the Catholic Church's unreasonable ban on usury, which greatly restrained trade and business and funneled profits into the Jewish money lender's hands, but the Protestants answer (adopting the Jewish practice of unrestrained usury) lead directly to the modern Global Corporate Nobility that rules the world today.

One of the few good things about Islam (in addition to keeping their bitches under control) is their religious "work-around" for dealing with the real world necessity of charging interest on monetary loans.

By the tenants of Islam, Muslim lenders are supposed to also accept the _risk_ on loans they make, taking the fall with the borrower and losing their money if the business fails, as opposed to getting their profit no matter Hell or high water, as with Protestant and Jewish lending practices.

If the Catholic Church had adopted Islam's concept of "profit sharing" instead of flat-out banning usury, there would have been no Protestant Reformation and the world today would be a much better place.

And did he just have the wrong one? There were, like, a half-dozen (guy had a bit of an ego), though I assume you're referring to *the* Alexandria in Egypt.

>half-dozen
There's like 40 nowadays.

I believe it. It was a hyperbole, anyway.

Having a master's degree is hardly equivalent to being an academic, or playing academic politics, for the same reason having a bachelor's is hardly equivalnt.

I've got something that might fit

>highschool
>junior year
>have massive history boner
>discover history club
>so involved, so enthusiastic, that the current club president declares you next president
>next year rolls around
>oversight teacher decides we'll elect our new president on vote
>whatever, true blue club members love me
>vice president of NHS is talking about how she doesn't have a club presidency, and wants one for college application
>she hasn't ever gone to the club, decides she'll run
>she brings all her friends, that of course she has a million of
>we go up to deliver our election speeches
>I talk about widening the scope of our club interest, more historical eras, and having all meetings be interesting, and not just movie nights that are worth a damn
>she literally runs on a "social justice" idea, that we should focus on social justice in history, specifically the US with 150 years
>because she brought all her friends, she wins by a small margin, every veteran voted for me I'm told
>all her friends get the other positions, voting themselves into power
>I'm given a position, just because everyone, even them, knows I'm dedicated and knowledgeable
>we start drafting a "guess the historical figure" game in our next meeting
>since this is history club, not Sophomore World History, I start coming up with cool figures
>She's bringing middle school people to the board
>after Teddy Roosevelt or some BS I suggest Leif Eriksson
>bitch doesn't know who this is
>you literally just have to watch spongebob
>"I have a life"
>*yells internally*
>I suggest Karl Marx
>she writes his name down
>with a heart
>*screams internally*
The worst part is, it's that she can be a historically illiterate, popular girl Tumblrina, but she knows how to keep a club afloat, so she didn't get fired
I'm not a bitter person, I didn't attempt a coup, but damn I was mad
>mfw Tumblr invaded my club
I thought your green text stories were fake

What in your opinion is the worst atrocity?

>Ask why
>He explains to me that Hitler wanted to exterminate everyone in the world except for ethnic Germans
>I point out that's ridiculous and was never his plan
>NO DUDE THAT WAS TOTALLY HIS PLAN I'VE SEEN THIS HISTORY CHANNEL DOCUMENTARY ABOUT IT HE WOULD HAVE KILLED EVERYONE
>He's a self-proclaimed history buff

Kek
Did the same thing in high school, what with the vidya.
Studying ancient Greek mythology in English or some shit, mention how Kronos(God of time and father of Zeus) was punished to roam the desert with Aphrodite's castle on his back.
Some shit I got from playing God of War that week, shit was cash

As I remember all my history teachers from middle school up to the end of high school were all really based. The most memorable one was my 8th teacher.
>Was an absolute Civil war history fanatic
>Took part in civil war reenactments
>for the civil war unit he split the class in half with one side being union, or side the confederacy
>I'm on confederacy
>I'm elected vise president of the confederacy
>president is a total dick
>win the hearts and minds of my fellow johnny rebs by bringing in girl scout cookies for all on the confederacy
> Start a coup and over throw the president
> End results come in
>We win by a landslide
Felt good man.

>not Conquest
He knew his shit most of the time, though.
Every year he'd take a few students on a tour of London (if you could cough up the money, of course). It was pretty great.

I have one of your kind in a college class that constantly interrupts to ask questions and correct the teacher and I hate him more than anyone else in the world.
Fuck, just thinking about his entire person makes me furious.
Fuck you, Lucius.

I had an 8th grade history teacher who did something similar with the Revolution.

He split the class into Patriots, Loyalists, and Undecided. He gave out debate topics each day and the next day each group had to come prepared to debate that shit.

All of the history buffs and nerds volunteered for the loyalists (including myself) and all the Dudebros and popular kids went to the Patriots. The fucking loyalist side came prepared and ready every day and we reamed the Patriots so hard in the debates that eventually everyone in the Unaffiliated joined our side, and we ended up "winning" the revolution.

We also had a Civil War week and as a kid I had a massive boner for the Civil War, so when we got to "reenact" a field hospital (using random bits of gauze, ketchup, and Sprite for whiskey), I came dressed up in a full Union getup and acted that shit out like I was going for an Oscar.

8th Grade was THE best year I tell ya what.

Yeah fuck historical details. It was probs just aliens anyways

Admittedly I did think that was the Kremlin for a good while

I also did this in 8th grade only it was with the Upper Canada Rebellion. Too bad only a handful of students got into it because what 13 year old cares about domestic history.

Everyone is a secret feminist to one professor I had in 3rd year. EVERYONE.

People who said nice things about women, like Plato, were obvious, but people who shat on women like Pericles were doing so ironically or as a subversive attack on the patriarchy.

Literally
EVERY
PROMINENT
FIGURE
EVER
is a secret feminist.

We had a US history teacher that majored in Russian history and was previously on the no-fly list for her trips to the USSR. She did her job well, but you could tell it wasn't her area of expertise.
>was a civil war fanatic, but no to the extent you were
>For civil war unit we were split up for a debate
>Was the civil war predominately about slavery, or was it more about states right/economic factors?
>Put on "It was slavery" side
>Me and my m8 immediately organize our camp and assign research to different members, rallying our liberal comrades
>Other side really didn't care about the subject and did next to nothing
>Destroyed them in a debate rigged for their own victory
>Teacher ended up making up arguments for them
>Still won
Those were the days
