If you start from the Japanese invasion of China, then it began in 1937. But most people don't because that was a local conflict that just got folded into the larger war.
Germany invaded Poland in 1939. However the War was strictly limited to Europe at that point, and Eastern Europe at that, unless you count the Battle of the Atlantic. Which you probably should.
The Soviets had their Winter War in 1939-40 and some skirmishes with the Japanese in 1939, but not really a "war".
The Italians didn't declare war until 1940, after the Germans invaded France, which is when the war actually took on a "world" aspect as it kicked things off in Africa.
Japan attacking America in 1941 made the war truly a "world" war since that's when the Pacific theater opened up with Japanese attacks on America, British, Dutch, and other targets.
1939-1945 is generally your safest bet (and it's personally what I use), but if you're not including the Sino-Japanese War's start in 1937 then a case can be made that you shouldn't include the general German-Allied stuff either since it's all "local" prior to Italy getting involved in 1940.

First was my teacher while I was 13-16, and he did his job fairy well. But every now and then he'd slip up.

The Italians managed it a thousand years later: we know for a fact that there were Venetian and Portuguese trading colonies in China in the 1300s. Sure, the extra thousand years of naval development had shrunk the distances somewhat, but it was still a journey of several years to get from Venice to China.
Besides, you can actually pick up the basics of a language, at least for basic trading purposes, in as little as just a few months if you're surrounded by speakers of it.

I had two really good history teachers so I don't think I ever heard any blatant bullshit from them, but holy fuck my US government teacher was bad.
She seriously tried to tell the class at one point that democrats and republicans are the only two parties to have ever existed in American politics. She also had basically no understanding of how the electoral college works.
I never brought it up in class though. I preferred to ask/comment about it after class to clarify or tell her she is wrong. I still do this in Uni but it rarely if ever happens anymore.

The Church's issue wasn't really with the actual traders, as they did put in effort and take risks to get their profit.
The problem was with the usury (via Jews at the time) that came with ever expanding trade, which is absolutely a case of profiting while doing nothing to earn that profit.

(I don't remember if she got the date right or just said "in the 500's), I started talking about Charlemagne to try to establish what I was talking about, but she either didn't seem to know about him or didn't seem to care. She got autistically stuck thinking Roman meant the empire, 3 people from A.P. who where in there for a study hall sided with her (I wasn't in A.P. because I hated the teacher), saying the Holy Roman Empire refereed to Constantine's Rome.

Which the European nobility had no real issues with, as it was their 2nd and 3rd sons who made up the hierarchy of the Church.
The fundamental problem at the time was the Catholic Church's unreasonable ban on usury, which greatly restrained trade and business and funneled profits into the Jewish money lender's hands, but the Protestants answer (adopting the Jewish practice of unrestrained usury) lead directly to the modern Global Corporate Nobility that rules the world today.
One of the few good things about Islam (in addition to keeping their bitches under control) is their religious "work-around" for dealing with the real world necessity of charging interest on monetary loans.
By the tenants of Islam, Muslim lenders are supposed to also accept the _risk_ on loans they make, taking the fall with the borrower and losing their money if the business fails, as opposed to getting their profit no matter Hell or high water, as with Protestant and Jewish lending practices.
If the Catholic Church had adopted Islam's concept of "profit sharing" instead of flat-out banning usury, there would have been no Protestant Reformation and the world today would be a much better place.

I had an 8th grade history teacher who did something similar with the Revolution.
He split the class into Patriots, Loyalists, and Undecided. He gave out debate topics each day and the next day each group had to come prepared to debate that shit.
All of the history buffs and nerds volunteered for the loyalists (including myself) and all the Dudebros and popular kids went to the Patriots. The fucking loyalist side came prepared and ready every day and we reamed the Patriots so hard in the debates that eventually everyone in the Unaffiliated joined our side, and we ended up "winning" the revolution.
We also had a Civil War week and as a kid I had a massive boner for the Civil War, so when we got to "reenact" a field hospital (using random bits of gauze, ketchup, and Sprite for whiskey), I came dressed up in a full Union getup and acted that shit out like I was going for an Oscar.
8th Grade was THE best year I tell ya what.
