What happened to the Phoenicians?
>>
>>660661
They mixed with Iberians and together molded the modern Spaniard.
>>
conquered by Persia, conquered by Macedon, and later finished off by Rome.

Though that isn't to say it was a weak society, Carthage is arguably Rome's most powerful challenge in their rise to power, with Carthage trading blow for blow and lasting 100 years against them.

But yeah in the end they lost to simple conquest, as most nations did.
>>
>>660699
Also they weren't as Militaristic and didn't take the Punic War as seriously as the Romans did, The Fact that The Cathagians reached Italy Made the Romans fanatics while many in Carthage went out to hinder the efforts for their own political Gains
>>
>>660721
This made zero difference. Carthage sent Hannibal what reinforcements they could, and they could not have supplied more. Carthage was not a serious rival after the 1st PW, as Rome controlled the Med. Hannibal's chimpout could end in only one way and that's what happened.
>>
>>660736
This. I dont think anyones sure how the Romans did it, but they managed to build up navies really quick. Whatever hannibal managed to accomplish didnt matter becuase the romans then grabbed cathage by the balls by sending troops to fuck up Sicily or north africa.

1st Punic war sealed carthage's fate. Should have just been happy with what it had in Sicily.
>>
>>660661
They adapted their mercantile culture with the culture of their conquerors, and spread around the world when the opportunity came.

In 1943, Lebanon gained its independence.

They did it the same way we do it now, they built mock ships (or real ships) in man-made lakes or lagoons and trained their crews there. Put that Roman genius for practical engineering to good use, plus a few clever gizmos like the boarding corvus.
>>
>>660661
They're Saridnians now.
>>
>>660762
They put the Greek Cities in southern Italy to work to create them a proper navy.
>>
>>660762
...we know more or less exactly how they did it.

>>660797
Is correct.

Build rowing benches on land, train men to row, shit out a fleet.

Rome had such a massive manpower advamjtage that they could-and DID-lose a hundred thousand men at sea and shit out another fleet.

Carthage, with its very limited pool of citizens to crew their ships, couldn't.

It doesn't help that the Romans were able to capture Carthaginian ships, and rapidly reverse engineered the things.

It's the classical equivalent of murrica vs japan.

Well, America already had a capable navy and good sailors, but whatever.
>>
>>660913
I forgot to add, they also had naval allies-cities obligated to provide ships and crews instead of armies.
>>
>>660762

I remember reading that the Roman's were able to reverse engineer carthaginian ships and then build them out of green wood. The ships would only last a couple seasons but got the job done.
>>
>>660913
>It's the classical equivalent of murrica vs japan.
>Well, America already had a capable navy and good sailors, but whatever.
Except USN defeated IJN with ships in hand, not with newly built ships.
>>
>>661072
I think he was more pointing out the similarity of one side being able to afford far more losses than the other.
>>
>>661091
Then he doesn't understand the meaning of "classic equivalent." Maybe he meant to say "a stretch comparison" or "two situations that were completely different except in this one aspect."
>>
>>661096
Note that he said "classical equivalent", not "classic equivalent", he was noting the time period of the case as opposed to the modern America vs. Japan case.
It doesn't necessarily make him any more accurate regarding their similarities, but it seemed like you might have misread him there slightly.
>>
>>660661
They merged population of their former colonies which were absorbed and conquered by lager powers
>>
>>661119
It's just a weird thing to say. Why force a comparison where it practically doesn't exist?
>>
they b ded
>>
>>661072
Are you kidding? The USN vomited out ships at an absolutely incredible pace over the course of the war.
>>
>>660661
More importantly, were they white?
>>
>>661181
So what is your point exactly?
>>
>>661209
That the exceptionally skilled japanese sailors and aviators took on a power made up of inferior pilots and (arguably) seamen and got absolutely drowned in blood because numbers and industry matter.
>>
>>661222
Except "exceptionally skilled japanese sailors and aviators" managed to lose in 1942 to the USN that existed already in 1942, while almost always having numerical advantage.
They also suffered horrific attrition, even in battles they supposedly won.

How about we go back to the Phoenicians?
What is the latest that we find Semitic script in Iberia? Ba'al worship?
>>
>>661234
And more importantly: who were the people of Tartessos? They were not Phoenician, and not Celtic (evidence being that Greco-Roman historians said they traded with Celtic lands--the implication being they were not on Celtic lands themselves). They also had an "Orientalized" culture. Could they have been another Semitic peoples whom were both earlier and less prolific than the Phoenicians?

Tartessos was never found and is probably a myth..
Tartessian is just a namde made up by archeologists and linguists to refer to an ancient language found in the area dating to the sixth-fith century bc.
Tarshish (the biblical city) on the other hand, probably referred to Sardinia, the only document mentioning Tarshish outside of the Eastern med is in Sardinia and dated to 850 bc which was actually quite advanced during that time (pic related), while there were not advanced settlemnts in the early iron age in the area of Tartessos (While Bronze age and early iron age Sardinia is covered in monuments and has the oldest statues in Europe).
>>
>>660664
>>660699
Also, Carthage was Phoenician. Many modern day Lebanese, especially Maronites, claim to be of Phoenician decent, and most Lebanese schools teach kids that they are of Phoenician decent, but i don't know how accurate these claims are.
>>
So, we write using the Latin alphabet
it is derived from the Greek alphabet
which is adapted from the Phoenician alphabet
which is a Semitic writing system?
is this correct? are we being Jewed by writing?

Its basically a Christian meme to make themselves seem special and separate them from the Shiites and Sunnis they were fighting. Really, Phoenician genes are probably spread out around levantine populations.
Iirc analysis done on a Phoenician mummy found strongly suggested that they were genetically close to all of the Lebanese population regardless of sect
>>
>>664579
In fact, much of the Eastern Mediterranean populations (especially the Greek Peninsula, the Aegean Islands, Anatolian coasts, the Levant and the Jewish diaspora) are almost indistinguishable genetically.

>Jews
I wouldn't go that far
>>
>>664579
Yes, that is correct. The Lebanese population in general - not just the Maronites - remain with the genetic traits, and to a lesser extent, cultural traits, of its Phoenician ancestors.
>>
>>664696
I'm sorry you have to share genetic material with them but it's true.
To be fair what I said applies more to Iraqi or Sephardi Jews than to the Anglo-Slavic branch.
>>
They came to America :^)

The Phoenicians spoke Hebrew.
>>
They were phoeniced.
>>
>>664792
No they didn't what the fuck are you on
>>
>>664836
The language of the Phoenicians was almost identical to the Hebrew of the time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenician_language

They were basically two dialects of the same language, they could easily communicate with one another.

Sorry, I wasn't aware about the degree of mutual intelligibility between the different canaanite languages if that's true.
>>
>>665090
No need to apologize to someone on an anonymous South African archery website.
>>
>>664792
They spoke a similar language (as the Hebrew originated from the Phoenician, and not the opposite) but did not have a common origin.

Migrating to Canaan, the Hebrews simply adopted the local language.

Turns out they were more like Phoenican't than Phoenican
>>
>>660661
Their empire collapsed because they were a bunch of Phoenies.
>>
>>660661
The Levant phoenicians were a key part of the Persian empire, supplying most of it's fleet.
>>
>>660736
>Carthage sent Hannibal what reinforcements they could, and they could not have supplied more.
Uh, no they didn't.

There was an active block within the Carthaginian government opposed to Hannibal completely, so they sent him virtually nothing, and sent as little as they could get away with to his brother Hasdrubal in Iberia.

Fucking read a history book.
