The weirdest cruel and unusual punishments come mostly from germans and slavs, as you'd probably imagine.

Jewish thiefs would be hung upside down by their feet with two hungry angry dogs. Specific crimes would have more specific punishments, such as boiling to death, flaying, or whipping to death.

The breaking wheel was used up to the 19th century and was a common punishment all through Krautland and literally meant being bludgeoned to death with a stick. Depending also on how stupid or illiterate was the judge who gave the sentence, the order would to actually use a wagon wheel to break the limbs of someone tied to another wheel, which I just find to be hilarious

Then there is impalement, which apparently was very common in the slav countries, as were multiple forms of caning and whipping to death

"From the 15th century, ordinances are retained that threaten with a terrible punishment for those who stripped off the bark of a standing tree in the common woods. A typical wording is found in the 1401 ordinance from Oberursel:[8]

"and whoever is caught stripping off a standing tree, mercy would have been more beneficial to him than the law is; for when law is to be fulfilled, then one is to cut up his stomach at the navel, and pull out a length of the gut. The gut is to be nailed to the tree, and one is keep going around that tree with the person, so long as he still has any part of the gut left in his body"

>One wretched fellow slipped from the rope by which he was tied to the guns just before the explosion, and his arm was nearly set on fire. While hanging in his agony under the gun, a sergeant applied a pistol to his head; and three times the cap snapped, the man each time wincing from the expected shot. At last a rifle was fired into the back of his head, and the blood poured out of the nose and mouth like water from a briskly handled pump. This was the most horrible sight of all. I have seen death in all its forms, but never anything to equal this man's end.

>>
Burning at the stake always struck me as one of the worst ways to die
>>
>>652493
It's not as bad as it looks. Your nerve endings burn and you sufficate from the smoke, making it not that painful.
>>
>>652493
It's probably more from the anticipation of it all. You would suffocate (if they were merciful) before you burned to death, due to the smoke inhalation causing asphyxiation. What would be worse is being dropped into boiling water or oil, no way of dying from a relatively painless end there.

Not necessarily torture, but the idea of heating up sand till it's glowing red and pouring it into the armor of men trying to besiege a city is absolutely horrifying. God only knows how bad the wounds were afterwards.

Who the everloving fuck would actually stand there, with a partner, and saw through a man lengthwise.
You start with a man's holies, he's screaming like a madman all the while, and his screams began to sputter and spit with the blood running down him, you're then sawing through bone, then the organs that hold his shit (which will smell), and hopefully he's unconscious by then. You probably had to choose which way down the spine you'd go.

Actually it was a hell of a lot more common for captured soldiers to just be pressed into the army that captured them. The armies tended to consist of a lot of mercenaries, so it took surprisingly little convincing to get a man to join the enemy army, especially when the alternative was death.

Of course, that sometimes came back to bite them. There's at least one instance of the French pressing former Spanish (Germans, but serving in the Spanish army) soldiers into service, only to have them desert back to the Spanish in the next battle.

Really it seems the worst of the violence came not between soldiers, but between soldiers and civilians and between civilians. Though the warring factions were about as secular as you could get for the time, there were radicals on both sides who went pretty nuts with things, and it only got worse as church lands switched hands several times between Catholics and Protestants. Worse, the Calvinists literally thought the world was ending, and the most devastating war in European history was leaving many to agree with them, so you had witch hunts become super popular.

The violence from soldier to civilian seemed to be more related to looting, however. Wallenstein's brilliant idea to just tell his men to go get their pay from the nearest town caused some pretty brutal pillaging at times, and you were very thoroughly fucked if your town fell after a particularly bad siege. Just look at Magdeberg - a city of 25,000 was reduced to less than 500 after the city fell.

And remember - all this happened because three guys got thrown out of a window.

This was likely never done though. It's from Christian mythology: a martyrdom attributed to a Christian saint.

A lof of these outrageous methods of executions were never commonly committed.

As soon as execution was institutionalised, it usually came down to beheading or hanging.

>>652656
Being an executioner was usually a family tradition since being an executioner meant to be a social outcast who wasn't allowed to marry honest citizens and mingle with them. Executioners often also held other lowly professions, e.g. taking care of animal carcasses. They usually weren't retarded though.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_by_sawing

One of the most notorious cases of sawing as execution is that of the Alcaide[26] (castellan/governor) Melec under emperor Moulay Ishmael (r.1672-1727). The fullest description of this execution is found in Dominique Busnot's[27] 1714 work Histoire du règne de Mouley Ismael, although a brief notice of the event can be found in the January 1706 edition of Present state of Europe.[28] In the following, the tale as told by Busnot will be given.[4]

Melec was judged as the chief rebel to be punished in a rebellion instigated by one of the emperor's sons, Mulay Muhammad. In particular, according to Busnot, the empress was incensed that Melec had personally beheaded one of her cousins, Ali Bouchasra.[29] In September/October 1705,[28] Mulay Ismail sent for his chief carpenter, and asked if his saws were capable of sawing a man in two. The carpenter answered "Sure enough". He was then given the grisly task, and before he left, he asked him whether Melec should be sawn across or along the length. The emperor said the sawing should proceed lengthwise, from the head downwards. He told, however, Boachasra's sons, they should follow the carpenter and decide for themselves how best to take revenge upon the murderer (i.e., Melec) of their father. Taking with him 8 of the public executioner's assistants, the master carpenter went to the prison where Melec was held, two of his brand new saws packed in cloth, in order to keep from Melec information of the intended manner of execution. Melec was now placed on a mule, bound with an iron chain, and led to the public square, where some 4000 of his relatives and members of his tribe were assembled. These made a "terrifying" spectacle through screaming, and clawing their faces in a public display of grief. Melec, on the other hand, seemed unperturbed, calmly smoking from his tobacco pipe.
>>
>>653778
When taken down from the mule, Melec's clothes were removed, damning letters "proving" his treason was cast in the fire.

Then, he was strapped onto a board, and placed upon a sawbench, his arms and legs fastened. The executioners team then sought to start by sawing him from the head downwards, but Boucasra's sons intervened, and demanded that one began between Melec's legs instead, because otherwise, he would die too quickly. Under the terrible screams of Melec and his relatives, thus began his execution. Once they had sawed him up to the navel, they pulled out the saw in order to commence from the other side. Melec is said to have been still conscious, asking for some water. His friends, though, thought it best to hasten his demise and shorten his sufferings, and the executioners went on, sawing him from skull to navel so he fell apart. In the process, chunks of flesh were ripped out by the saw's teeth, causing blood to splatter everywhere, thus making the execution quite unbearable to watch.

Around 300 other conspirators were impaled alive, and another report states that in addition to these, some other 20 chief conspirators had their arms and legs sawed off, and left to expire in the marketplace.

What the Carthaginians did to that Roman guy.

Basically they cut off his eyelids and let him stare at the sun untill he turned blind, while he was covered in honey and giants wasps would keep stinging him (even in the eyes) then after several hours of torture they put him in a barrel with spikes and let him fall off a cliff and die.

This

for all you faggots who dont know what it is

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaphism

"The intended victim was stripped naked and then firmly fastened within the interior space of two narrow rowing boats (or hollowed-out tree trunks) joined together one on top of the other with the head, hands and feet protruding. The condemned was forced to ingest milk and honey to the point of developing severe diarrhea, and more honey would be poured on him to attract insects, with special attention devoted to the eyes, ears, mouth, face, genitals, and anus. In some cases, the executioner would mix milk and honey and pour that mixture all over the victim. He would then be left to float on a stagnant pond or be exposed to the sun. The defenseless individual's feces accumulated within the container, attracting more insects which would eat and breed within the victim's exposed flesh, which—pursuant to interruption of the blood supply by burrowing insects—became increasingly gangrenous. The individual would lie naked, covered from head to toe in milk, honey, and his own feces. The feeding would be repeated each day in some cases to prolong the torture, so that fatal dehydration or starvation did not occur. Death, when it eventually occurred, was probably due to a combination of dehydration, starvation, and septic shock. Delirium would typically set in after a few days"

Water Cure is pretty fucked up.

>The manner of his torture was as follows: First they hoisted him up by the hands with a cord on a large door, where they made him fast upon two staples of iron, fixed on both sides, at the top of the door posts, having his hands one from the other as wide as they could stretch. Being thus made fast, his feet hung some two foot from the ground; which also they stretched asunder as far as they would stretch, and so made them fast beneath unto the door trees on each side. Then they bound a cloth about his neck and face so close, that little or no water could go by. That done, they poured the water softly upon his head until the cloth was full, up to the mouth and nostrils, and somewhat higher; so that he could not draw breath, but he must with all suck in the water: which being still continued to be poured in softly, forced all his inward parts, come out of his nose, ears, eyes, and often as it were stifling and choking him, at length took away his breath, and brought him to a swoon or fainting. Then they took him quickly down, and made him vomit up the water. Being a little recovered, they trussed him up again, and poured water as before, taking him down as soon as he seemed to be stifled. In this manner they handled him three or four several times with water, until his body was swollen twice or thrice as big as before, his cheeks like great bladders, and his eyes staring and strutting out beyond his forehead.

This is a good story, apart from morbidness, because it shows well when most of this terrible punishments were used. The worst punishments were for traitors, since making it terrifying was even more important than making it painful.

In Sweden the executioner was a man condemned to death. He was marked in the face and lived as an outcast. He would then be killed by the next to be executioner. Basically being on death row but you get to kill people and look creepy. What the Hungarians did to György Dózsa was pretty fucked up. He led a peasants' revolt against the kingdom's landed nobility which failed and caught, tortured, and executed along with his followers.

>He was captured after the battle, and condemned to sit on a heated smoldering iron throne with a heated iron crown on his head and a heated sceptre in his hand (mocking at his ambition to be king). While he was suffering in this way, a procession of nine fellow rebels, who had been starved beforehand, were led to this throne. In the lead was Dózsa's younger brother, Gergely, who was cut in three despite Dózsa asking for Gergely to be spared. Next, executioners removed hot pliers from fire and forced them into Dózsa's skin. After pulling flesh from him, the remaining rebels were ordered to bite where the hot iron had been inserted and to swallow the flesh. Those who refused, about three or four, were simply cut up which prompted the remaining rebels to do as commanded. In the end, Dózsa died on the throne of iron from the damage that was inflicted while the rebels who obeyed were let go without further harm

A female Roman serial killer named Locusta who poisoned her victims is said to have been killed in the Colosseum by being raped by a giraffe which was trained specifically for that purpose.

But this tale is doubted by many because the earliest account was written a hundred years after the supposed incident and is very similar to a fictional Roman story about a woman who died from being raped by a donkey.

Even if probably not true, I thought it deserved an honorable mention.

At his trial, Gérard was sentenced to be brutally – even by the standards of that time – killed. The magistrates decreed that the right hand of Gérard should be burned off with a red-hot iron, that his flesh should be torn from his bones with pincers in six different places, that he should be quartered and disemboweled alive, his heart torn from his bosom and flung in his face, and that, finally, his head should be taken off.[6]

Gérard's torture was also very brutal. On the first night of his imprisonment Gérard was hung on a pole and lashed with a whip. After that his wounds were smeared with honey and a goat was brought to lick the honey off his skin with his rough tongue. The goat however refused to touch the body of the sentenced. After this and other tortures he was left to pass the night with his hands and feet bound together, like a ball, so sleep would be difficult. During the following three days, he was repeatedly mocked and hung on a pole with his hands tied behind his back. Then a weight of 300 metric pounds (150 kg) was attached to each of his big toes for half an hour. After this half hour Gérard was fitted with shoes made of well-oiled, uncured dog skin; the shoes were two fingers shorter than his feet. In this state he was put before a fire. When the shoes warmed up, they contracted, crushing the feet inside them to stumps. When the shoes were removed, his half-broiled skin was torn off. After his feet were damaged, his armpits were branded. After that he was dressed in a shirt soaked in alcohol. Then burning bacon fat was poured over him and sharp nails were stuck between the flesh and the nails of his hands and feet. Gérard is said to have remained calm during his torture. On 14 July 1584, Gérard was executed

Sorry should have elaborated. After they had rebelled against the church (long story: ) they had the three rebellion leaders brought out and tied to a pole by their necks. They were stripped naked and went to the first man,put burning tongues under each armpit, and slowly pulled him apart, bit by bit, going as far as pulling tendons and nerves off the bones, making sure he stayed alive while doing it, for over an hour. They then went and did the exact same thing go the other two guys he was tied to. They later put what was left of them in three cages, then hung them up in front of the church where they have been ever since.

Holy shit, you weren't joking.

Out of curiosity, do any other cities still have torture trophies hung up or paraded around in public? This is the sort of thing I'd expect to find at some village shrine or nowhere monastery, not hanging in the town square of a modern city.

Come and See isn't a true story senpai.
>>
>>658381
I wouldn't say it isn't true. I live in modern Sudetenland, north Moravia to be exact, and my mother told me a story of a woman that lived about 3 km where i live (where she lived when she was young). Basically it was told to her by 2 people from the village, Mum was young so you can imagine she didn't understand much but the point was that a few locals were locked up in a barn that was set on fire. Naturally anyone who had working arms started clawing at ground (she went into details how the flesh under nail was completely pushed back by the amount of dirt they clawed some used the tools in the barn, I don't recall much from story but then again it's a long time since mum heard the story and it might be just a story, since I don't remember much I wouldn't want to make stuff up. Might ask her about if she remembers more.

Sources vary on its useage.
Some describe it as a "light" punisment for petty thieves, drunkards, disobedient soldiers and such.
Others describe it as an invention by the Spanish Inquisition for the sole purpose of torturing women.

They also vary from "moderate discomfort" to people being sliced in half somehow.

If torture like this was perceived as the only method of maintaining social civility, would it be justified? Even if there were in fact better methods of doing so, would it be "forgivable" if they genuinely did it because they were convinced it was the only way? I'm not talking so much about religious fanaticism atm, though I'm really curious how that would be assessed, since moral accountability becomes hazy when mental illness and delusion is considered.

>Pitchcapping refers to a form of torture used by the [British] military against suspected Irish rebels during the period of the 1798 rebellion, most famously on Anthony Perry, one of the leaders of the Wexford Rebels.

>The process involved pouring hot pitch, or tar (mainly used at the time for lighting purposes), into a conical shaped paper "cap", which was forced onto a bound suspect's head, allowed to cool, then rapidly removed, taking with it a portion of the suspect's skin and tissue.

Lingchi. Or famously known as "Death by a Thousand Cuts." (though the Chinese name means "slow slicing.")

The worst punishment in China. It's simple really: Involves you being tied to a post and an executioner making gradual tiny cuts/dismemberments (nails, fiingertips, penis heads or such) until he involves himself in bigger cuts to the point that you don't resemble human anymore.

It's reserved for leaders of rebellions, people who have killed their own parents, slaves/servants who killed their masters, and people who have killed 5 members of one family. Interestingly, a maboliu (someone who helps arrange extra-marital affairs) was Lingchi'd as the cuckolded husband's family was destroyed by an affair when the lover convinced the wife to kill the husband.

Funnily enough: Imperial China was enlightened in regards to punishment as Lingchi was bog-standard worst of the codified five punishments (whipping, imprisonment, exile/penal military service, beheading, lingchi). Unlike some civilizations where executions were randomly modified by whims of monarchs/townsfolk.

at first I was going to reply "of course it was used!" but I actually researched the last half hour online as to what actual beyond-a-doubt proof we have. the talk on the wiki page had a rant from some fag who says every discussion of it is alleged because it was (only?) written about by Christians describing deaths of Christian martyrs.

In this beyond-a-reasonable-doubt proof (now with DNA!) age, I suppose you could say it was just a story. But there is so much to this story. It's a story that was popular for ages.
The evidence may be circumstantial, but to me at least, it's convincing. where there's smoke (coming from a bull), there's usually fire (under it, roasting a person to death).

If you're in battle or something like that back then, are there any effective ways to kill yourself if you think you're about to be captured?

It's easier today; when you start getting overrun you just shoot yourself in the head, but what did they have to do back then? Carry poison around with you constantly? Force yourself to fall on your own sword? Slit your throat?
