I am left with the impression that it was part of Romania that Poland wrestled away to be her vassal.

The principality of Moldova was founded in 1346 by moldovan king Bogdan the I.
While initially, it was indeed a mark created by hungary against the tatars who raided the kingdom from the north, it evolved to be it's own kingdom. The ottomans weren't involved in it's creation.
