Can anyone summarize this and give some suggestions on what to read? Obviously, there's Gutierrez's A Theology Of Liberation, but other than that?

It's completely untenenable from a Catholic or Protestant position.

not OP, but post it anyway

I know the Pope likes it, but it's not really compatible with Christianity, because liberation in Christianity is all about liberation from one's own sin, whereas liberation theology is hardly about liberation for sin at all, unless rich people are doing the sinning. Christianity is about starting with yourself: if you want to see the cause of all the world's problems, you look in the mirror. If you gave the poor man ten million dollars, would he be any better?

Both communism and capitalism (at least in its modern, neo-liberal form) are anathema to Church teaching because both grow from the same root - determinist materialism. As such, both are equally dangerous to humanity. The only difference is that neo-liberalism destroys more slowly and less obviously.

Read Ratzinger's take on the subject:

Ooh, nice.

Anyone else?

It is heresy. The leaders of Liberation Theology left the Catholic Church.

>I know the Pope likes it

He doesn't. He has a similar outlook on "fighting poverty" but he is not in favor of LT.
