Why aren't we having posh-as-fuck gladiator fights in a colosseum like the romans did?

I don't think we quite cut how decadent we are in this day and age with TV shows and porn when we could be having some gladiators go at eachother.

I feel despair everytime I think about not having seen some mock gladiator sea battles.

why donĀ“t you watch some gay pron

I can draw some furry porn for you if you want.

We do.

Rugby or hand-egg are about as close to the push of early and pre-gunpowder warfare as we can have.

I do predict that in the next ten to fifteen years, drone-wars will begin to be a popular sport. Some moron like Trump or McMahon will buy a few hundred km^2 of land in the Mojave desert or somewhere in Utah, and then inform nerds of the world that if they submit armies of drones, conforming to certain rules (each drone has to weigh in at under 50 kg, total army has to be under ten tons, no chemical explosives or propellants, things like that), they can just have at each other. Bare minimum rules, and no humans allowed on the field of battle.

This is the closest to OP that we'll get, unless Mad Max times happen, then who the hell knows?
>>
>>823867

MMA is pretty damn close.

>drone-wars

fuck yes

We have the Middle East to satisfy our lust for watching others fight to the death

That's a humane way to use the military-industrial complex to achieve economy growth, faggot. It isn't as stupid as you want it to be, hippie.

Yes they did. The absolute madmen.
>>

Because fat posh westerners have no sense of tragedy.

In America and such, death is supposed to have ""meaning"". We can't handle senseless killing, our stomachs are weak. It's a sign of weakness and decay. Everybody lies to make others comfortable.

Just look at the ancient Greeks. They literally called Socrates picklenose because he had a fat ugly nose like a pickle. But for him to get upset or embarrassed about that would be for him to not know himself. You can see multiple times in the Iliad when men say "I'll go fight Hector" and the other soldiers just say "shut up, you're not that good".

American society is the opposite of knowing yourself, it's about shoveling delusions and lies into people 24/7, and violence like the gladiators would remind people of their own mortality.
>>

It's a real suggestion, and I think it would be a real money-maker.

It's just that you need someone who is willing to lose a few hundred million to set up the /first/ one. Because you might do it just a handful of years before the technology is really ready for it, and you won't get any of that money back.

>hippy

You say that like it's a joke, but some of the most financially prudent people I've known are hippies.

As in, out of the top five people I know personally whose command of money I respect, three of them are hippies (they grow their own food, they busk for money, they sell stuff on the street for money, they do odd-jobs for money, and they invest their money in things only /biz/ could talk about comfortably), one is a typical moneyed-douche (started with more than enough money, now has /even/ more after investing it), and one is completely inexplicable (could possibly be just lucky for a really long time).

I actually agree. We live in the most affluent period in history, we should have week long parties, orgies, sacrifices and rituals. There should be mystery cults where you can go to fuck cabals of religious maniac lesbians. There should be temples where you can go to trip so much balls you commune with the gods. There should be feasts where you drink wine and eat full pigs and lambs until you puke and eat more, for days on end. We can literally afford this shit. We are a failure and an embarassment.
>>
>>824083

Is this a deliberate joke of a post?

You can find all these things in any average sized city in the western world, and you don't have to spend years searching for them either.
>>
>>823867
you know, if someone ever sets up a fascist regime again, reintroducing gladiatorial battles would be a perfect way to propagate martial virtues and such

oh but this is done nowadays.
Just not by the plebs. Only by the praticians of our time.
Just like in Ancient Rome.
>>
>>823867
You don't understand how brutal the Romans truly were. Read some primary sources on the subject.
>>
Bullfighting is getting banned in places like Spain and Mexico because it hurts the feelings of animal lovers.

Do you really think gladiator fights are going to be allowed? Even with death-row inmates?
>>
>>824572
Propagating martial virtues with gladiators is like propagating family values with porn.
>>
>>825164

It's getting banned because it's a goddam mafia
>>
Whenever I try to picture those amphitheater battles, there's always heavy bass music as a background.

Experiencing the reality of it, without a soundtrack, would probably be too disillusioning.

I guess Ancient Rome sucked ass.

Get out of here you dirty Carthaginian
>>
>>825216
most definitely, but can I really escape that?

My conception of what a Roman Gladiator battle would be like is entirely molded by Hollywood movies and modern sports events, both of are full of sideshows and spectacle that the Romans would never even have thought of.

Going back in time to view an actual colliesum battle would probably just be underwhelming.
>>
>>825211
>without a soundtrack

Haven't you ever been to a stadium? The roar of the crowd is soundtrack enough.
>>
>>825238
I actually have, and the roar of the crowd, when it is happening, is an intense experience, but modern stadiums still employ music and acoustics on a level the Romans couldn't even conceive of.

We are decadent enough as is. Consumerist hedonism is this society's orientation.

but marius used gladiators to reform the roman army senpai
>>
>>825164
well you can make the argument that it's cruel because animals never have a say in what they do. but if you have gladiators who accept the risks of what they're doing it would be different. moralfags would get riled up nonetheless though
>>
>>827356
How so?

We literally have people fight each-other in a cage until unconsciousness for other's amusement.

Hes got a point. Eventually were all going to be castrated hippies I bet though.

Found the Gaul.
>>
>>823867
Society not allowed suicidal actions and duels thus gladiator fights which was type of duels not allowed too.
>>
>>829863
before Spartacus. Spartacus revolt was 73 to 71 bc. Marius' reforms was around 105-100 bc.
>>
>>827368
>well you can make the argument that it's cruel because animals never have a say in what they do.

Animals aren't capable of rational thought though, they're mostly guided by instinct. It would be cruel to kill a human baby because that baby will eventually grow into a human capable of rational thought, it would be cruel to kill a dog because It's a domestic animal that represents no harm. But it wouldn't be cruel to kill a fully grown bull because It's a savage animal that will never think or communicate on a rational way and is capable of attacking you if it gets hungry.
>>
Was gladiatorial combat the TV game show of Rome?
>>
>>830062
Yes. Free bread and circus.
Gladiator managers were called lanistas and were literally slum pimps with political connections. Gladiators were slaves bought in the mines and galleys, they were well fed and had women.
>>
>>830095
Did the Gladiator games ever cause any riots like the races in Constantinople did?
>>
>>830095
You forgot the part where they rarely died and free men could actually join ... shit like that...
>>
>>830169
Yep the first gladiators were free men, but then it became big entertainment business.
>>
>>823867
Boxing is quite similar, just without the slavery.
>>
>>824058
Gladiator fights (mostly) weren't ever to the death. Vast majority were accidentally deaths, or injuries that later led to death, like modern sports.
>>
>>823960
Came here to post this. MMA fights seem pretty close
