how did the greeks even lost the greco-turkish war in 1919? they got the support of the entire allies while they were up against a partitioned country who just lost 1.5 million in ww1, with constant rebellion and are at war with the french in the south
>>
Lenin, among other things.

1) Greeks got greedy
2) Greek allied support is largely moral & material. France and Britain are tired of war that it left Greece to it and cheered them from the sidelines.
3) The officer corps of Turkey actually survived WWI. Greece was up against WWI Vets.

The Greeks had their chance and lost it

>the allies were divided and exhausted from the First World War and their attention was, to a large extent, focused elsewhere
>the Turkish nationalists had the Ottoman officer corps and the rump of the Ottoman army available to them
>the Turkish nationalists were led by Ataturk, who was an outstanding military leader and statesman
>Ataturk struck up an alliance with the Soviet Russians early on in the conflict and was able to get gold and weapons from them
>much of Anatolia was untenable to the Allies because of Turkish resistance to occupation

These factors meant that the Turkish nationalists had a significant advantage in the war. Ataturk was smart in the way he isolated his enemies and his Turkish nationalists were a superior fighting force to the Armenians, French, and Greeks. The British were completely isolated by the end of the war and had to accept peace because of a lack of support domestically and internationally.

Bullshit!

Constitution of Ottoman Empire, Article 2, Istanbul is the capital of the Ottoman Empire. This city possesses no provilege or immunity peculiar to itself over the other towns of the empire.

Pic, related. If you can read old letters you can easily read İstanbul in original text.
>>
>>578289
The city had a number of names. Not everyone called it Istanbul back then.
"Istanbul" is even older than 1453 and comes from Greek though IIRC.

Yes but i've seen meme atatürk invented istanbul on 4chan several times.

A number of reasons, the principle being:

>overstretched lines

The Greek economy wasn't capable of supporting a complete invasion of Anatolia, but the Turks wouldn't give in unless Greece extinguished all resistance. They actually made it really close to Ankara before being halted.

>poor, split leadership

There were two main factions in Greece, the monarchists and the Venizelists. The Venizelists pushed for peace, but were kept at bay by King Alexander. When Alexander died in a freak monkey bite accident, the Venizelists gained more and more power, and the successor king, Constantine, took over, and decided that it'd be a good idea to seize Ankara. This was a terrible idea because Anatolia is big, barren, favors defense, and the interior lacked many Greeks, who helped the Greek army along the coast.

>poor allies

On paper, the opposition against the Turks is ridiculous, but they were just paper tigers. Great Britain didn't want to get its hands dirty, Italy outright opposed Greece because they wanted control of Albania, and Greece occupied Northern Epirus, France actually did very little in their "campaign" against Turkey, the Kurds only nominally opposed Turkey, and the Armenians were already devastated by their genocide some years before.

>politics

The Greco-Turkish War was a race against time for Greece. There's no way they could beat Turkey single handed in a prolonged war, and they knew that. Greece could have gone on fighting for a few more years after they quit in real life, but the Turks were forcing their entire weight on Greece, because they knew the west wouldn't help them. The invasion was also sabotaged as the Greeks weren't allowed to seize Constantinople by the British, and couldn't occupy the southern coast because lolitaly. The Greeks thought they'd get a lot more support, but they were very wrong.
