So what caused the decline of Detroit after ww2 and its instability in the 60s? Was it due to the auto industry facing heavy competition from Japan and Germany and later being outsourced to the third world or something else?
1 word: Niggers
>in the 20s and 30s, black people begin leaving the South en masse in search of opportunities in manufacturing centers
>as it turns out, the North is just as racist as the south
>racial tensions lead to a series of riots
>white flight reaches critical mass as the remaining, mostly black and working class, population begins to dominate local politics and vote in incompetent democrats
>automation and globalization reduce the amount of blue collar jobs available, most black people don't have the resources to make a jump to the new specialist economy
>white people all leave for the Detroit suburbs, which to this day are some of the wealthiest areas of the US

I work in the Auto Industry. Japan ate our lunch, which would you rather have, a Car that goes 100 miles on a tank of gas, or one that goes 1000 miles on a single tank.
Plus GM speculating didn't help much, sinking most of your assets into a stupid Ponzi scheme will fuck up anyone.

The process of creating a ghetto is similar to creating an atoll.
>have an island (industry)
>coral reef (service employees) springs up around the island
>island disappears
>coral reef is still there
Working class people don't have the resources to follow the money around the country, so when a local industry rises and falls, it typically leaves behind a bunch of proles.
As for Appalachia, it's just a mountainous place with exploitative coal companies, and the good government the South is famous for.

tl;dr Detroit's decline really began in the 50's with the post-war draw-down of military production and consolidation of the automotive industry into a few large companies that squeezed all of the smaller players out.

A decline of mill towns. The core industry supporting the city declines and as such everything turns to shit. This isn't unique to the US but in homogenized societies such as Sweden, where it's gotten so absurd that a black woman in Malmo have a better life expectancies, crime record and predicted income than a white guy who grew up in a declining mill town.
