They were not important. Freemason is the name of a catholic person with cultural customs tied to it but has always been free to think without the fear of persecution or the need to be persecuted because they abide by the dogmatic truth without imprisoning their faith.

It came at a time of a scientific revolution. To help people understand each other. Each man gets to cast their own stone. Some people came to power in society who did not believe in anything and started ridiculing the natural. They caused a cultural uproar via laws they propagated.
