Not necessarily.
For example, I've read most of the Bell Curve (some chapters just didn't interest me at all, sue me) and I understood it. It's hard not to since they break everything down very well and honestly they sometimes linger on topics for too long in an attempt to make their points crystal clear.
But with that being said, having understood and liked it I have to admit that book was dry and dull as fuck. And I can imagine most people who don't get aroused at the idea of reading through 600 or so pages of statistics would agree with me.
